since im 16 i have to got to school and i usually lift right after (3:00). is it bad if i eat oatmeal in the morning (7:30) before school and a pb+j and a nature valley oats'n' honey bar for lunch(12:00). will all of these carbs just get stored as fat since im not working out till hours later? any good alternatives? im bulking right now, trying to get some mass but i dont want to put on unnessesarcy fat if it can be avoided. any suggestions?

well, what kind of oatmeal are you talking about? instant? if so, then yes. umm, I'd say the pb and j isn't the best choice either. dont' eat white bread, also. ...ditch that god damn granola bar too! you're getting a lot of sugar with this stuff, but I guess it depends on your stats and goals..if you're a fatass, then cut this shit out, if you're trying to bulk...then moderately eat it I'd say, you're young, so you have a bit of an advantage IMO.

Good advice Freeman..

Dude...we don't "diet" teens...but rather encourage you to make healthier food choices....to eat 5, 6, even 7 times a day....getting adequate protein, fat, fiber...and slower burning carbohydrates as opposed to sugars and junk! Your own hormonal profile (high test), good recovery, and hard training will do the rest w/proper Nutrition

Read a lot more...then post your stats (complete stats.....w8, height, body type, genetics (parents..G/P, BF % etc), goals and currnet program....both training and eating...and there will be lots of people here to help you.

As a teen, and a teen that is trying "bulk" you should be eating carbs with every meal.

OK, I hate to keep being the dumb one that keeps asking you questions all the time, but is Instant Quaker Oats a bad thing to eat?

If so, arrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhh....eventually, I will get this straight and be able to diet effectively.

Seahawk - I think Freemans post was just a bit confusing. But you are correct, Instant Oats is bad and Old Fashioned Rolled Oats or Scottish Oats are good.

Posted by: Freeman

Yes instant oatmeal = sugar....I'll admit they're mighty tasty, but you gotta make the choice of what's more important to you!

ya ill drop that sh!t. been thinking about it for awhile.
whats a good alternative then for lunch at school?(without looking like too much of a goofball. BTW: im vegetarian and the pb+j has been on wheat bread) as soon as im out of that hellhole im gonna eat soooo much better since i could eat whatever/whenever.
im assuming the oats in paper packs are instant right? well thats what ive been eating. ill change though.
is 100% wheat bread/cereal bad? what high fiber carbs and slow burning carbs could i eat instead of what ive been doing? (instant oat bran?)

PS: thanks for the replys!

Posted by: Freeman

yes, that's the bad oatmeal you've been eating. 100% wheat bread should be ok for you. eat lots of green veggies. try brown rice as well. Umm, and when you eat PB try getting the natural kind with 0g-1g sugar in it. what are your goals? do you want big muscles? IMO, vegetarians probably have a harder time with this, but I am sure it can be done.

hey there
im pretty much in the same position as you, 17 (120 lb male), going to school, and on a bit of a bulk (tho i still need to yank my head out of my ass and get my diet together)
here is what my day usually looks like:

800 wake up late and have half a jar of peaches and some yogurt, sometimes some vector cereal--bad breakfast i know but i nevr have enough time in the morning... need to get out ofb ed sooner... and have to catch the bus around 808

~1030 1-2 tuna sandwichse with mayo on whole grain bread (sometimes chicken or steak and rice.. if there's good leftovers)

12 workout, postworkout shake afterwards

from 1-2 i have a med salad an a sandwich from the school (hamburger/kaiser bun, some sand. meat, cheese, and soemtimes mayo)

from 330-530 another sandwich or 2, some description as just above

when i get home from work (~600) dinner, usually a fairly balanced meal, basically whatever my mom cooks

banana sometime in evening

before i go to bed i have some kind of carb (usally bread or homecanned peaches/pears), cottage cheese, and applejuice with 1 tbsp flax oil

oh yeah and in there i have a multivitamin... and trying to get my water uptake back up again

maybe that'll help you.. i have seen msucle mass increases and maybe 3-5 lbs weight gain in the last month... but the weekend habit of staying up all night and absolute shit nutrition doesn't hlp

maybe i could get someone to critique my diet a bit

You're diet actually looks pretty good...there's some things I'd say you might want to cut out (bread, vector, juice) if you were anything but a 17 YO w/ a racing metabolism trying to grow

What you both need to remember is meal composition ...especially important for vegetarians. You both need to make sure you're getting a good amt of protein, some healthy fats, and a carb source in each meal.

shwaym...what are your protein sources? Dairy, eggs, Whey?

Posted by: shwaym

i just started having bread with soy nuts (14g protein)in it for lunch with milk (instead of PB+J). i eat a lot of soy, eggs, milk, whey, and occasionally tuna. i have a bowl of 100%Oat Bran for breakfast (7g protein...+ the milk...not too shabby). im starting to have more salads too(w/out dressing) & fruits. i have whey, eggs & couscous or tabula or wheat chex post workout. then 2 more meals later. has any body heard of quinoa, teff, or millet? (ancient grains..theres an article about it on bodybuilding.com) when i get some of those ill eat that postworkout.

does long grain brown rice have a high GI or low...on the GI site it says high but w8 says low...?

when i workout on the weekends...is it ok to eat a high protein breakfast? or just carbs? will i go catabolic without protein for breakfast?
