Net Carbs vs. Total Carbs......

I just read this on another site........

"Information about Low Carb Bars:
Low Carbohydrate bars often have a label for net carbs. Net carbs are the total amount of carbohydrates in grams, minus the total amount of carbohydrates that do not impact your blood sugar. For example, a Low Carb bar may have 14 grams of Total Carbohydrate and 12 of those 14 grams are non-impact carbs. Meaning that only 2 carbs (14g-12g) should be counted towards your daily carb totals. Only 2 carbs have an effect on your blood sugar and need to be counted.

Information about Fiber:
Fiber is considered a carbohydrate on nutriton labels but does not have any effect on blood sugar levels. For example, if a product has a Total Carbohydrate of 4 grams and 1 gram of fiber, only 3 (4-1) grams of carbohydrates count towards your daily totals, as these 3 carbs have an effect on your blood sugar."

Okay, the question is.....wasn't this "net carb" approach discussed here not too long ago? Does my memory serve me correctly in remembering that it was recommended that all carbohydrate should be counted/included in daily stats?

Not sure if it was discussed recently or not...but I don't (and suggest to others not to) count the carbs from fibre. I'm not sure what DP thinks on sugar alcohols though...only cause we generally don't suggest eating things w/ sugar alcohols

Whether carbs should be counted, or just net carbs depends on a whole host of factors.

What are your goals?

What sort of diet are you on?

How do you respond to insulin?

Likely what you posted above was written by a sales source.

If you are bulking, who cares, check the kcals.

If you are cutting, but your diet doesn't control insulin, or otherwise worry about carbohydrate counting, who cares? Total kcals matters only.

If you have no problem with insulin, who cares.

On the other hand, if you account for the kcals (and not simply think that other carbs (whether they be fiber or whatever) need not be accounted for, you are fooling yourself.

So....if you are counting macros, as a form of control, count ALL the carbs, if not, you can probably just factor in net carbs.

TP...you make some gr8 points...regardless of their effect on insulin carbs should be counted in terms of the total calories consumed....enough said

Well, I'be been counting all net carbs, (i.e.tot.carbs less fibre) In the past, prior to the new labeling regulations, I would only count those labeled as impact carbs , usually a substantially lower number.
I am attempting to track all macros now, so I felt that the carb issue was more important.
