hey all,

after reading thru the newbie stickies, i came across a very interesting article which states that "saturated fats arent as bad as what ppl think.."

ok, i agree that sat. fats are needed by our bodies for various reasons (but in small amounts), and from the article, they state that saturated fats are NOT the cause of blocked arteries, cancer and other factors... so my question is, is this commonly known "bad" fat actually bad?? if so, then why is it bad? what does it do?

cheers,

greddy

I keep my saturated fats low. Lean meats, chicken fish etc. The amount that you get through your protein, cream, eggs etc is plenty without having to add more. The fat you should be more concerend with Trans-Fatty acids.

hi jodi,

thanks for your reply..

but maybe im not explaining myself well.. what i was really asking was.. is saturated fats really bad? and if so, what do they cause if taken in large amounts... besides the fact that you will get extra calories.. (e.g. sickness, etc.)..

thanks in advance..

Don't take every article that you read literally. Saturated fats are not as bad as they use to be made out to be BUT, I still would make sure that most of your fats come from healthy EFA's. This is not an excuse to go adding Bacon into your diet.

OK...here is where I am confused. On the anabolic diet..I am allowed to eat bacon and sausage with eggs ..every day?? Then I read this...

Best Fats
Monounsaturated Fat Foods

Avocado

Oil (canola, olive, peanut, sesame)

Olives (all)

Nuts
almonds, cashews

filberts, hazelnuts

macadamia nuts
peanuts, pecans
pistachios

Peanut butter, old-fashioned

Sesame seeds
Good Fats
Polyunsaturated Fat Foods

Margarine (first ingredient is polyunsaturated oil)

Mayonnaise (regular or reduced-fat)

Miracle Whip Salad Dressing (regular orreduced-fat)

Nuts (walnuts)

Oil (corn, safflower, soybean, cottonseed)

Salad dressing (regular & reduced-fat)

Seeds (pumpkin, sunflower)

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring)

All fish and shellfish contain these fats

Nuts & flaxseed

Bad Fats
Saturated Fats

Bacon & Bacon grease

Butter (stick, whipped, reduced-fat)

Coconut

Cream & half-and-half

Cream cheese

Ice cream

Lard & salt pork

Palm & palm kernel oil

Bad Fats
Trans Fats

Hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats

Margarine (stick)

Nondairy creamers

Shortening

I will never promote a plan that involves that much saturated fat or transfatty acids. Its a CKD diet but even when I did CKD I got most of my fats from Omega 3's & 6's. Limited the saturated fat and nil for trans fatty acids.

Munching on a cup of unsalted almonds right now Jodi

on the Almonds

I sent Dr. Mauro DiPascale an email about the saturated fat thing. We chat quite a bit so if I get his permission I will post his response on the Message board here.

It's made out to be a lot more evil than it is, but still, excessive amounts (relative to the person) are not brilliant for health.

When you're in calorie deficit, it's much less of a concern, since nothing is stored in deficit, however, processing is still an issue, with free radical release probably top of the agenda (ahead of artery thickening et al.)

When bulking, keep it clean.

Posted by: trinsdad

I'll never get to the point where I am going to try and bulk..putting on weight is too easy for me..

Posted by: The_Chicken_Daddy

Good point. I dislike the word "bulk" in reference to diet.

I much prefer "gain" - which would have also be more suited in my post.

Good catch.

Here is an interesting article about trans-fats and just recently passed legislation (last week) finally requiring food manufacturers to explicitly state this component of fat on the labels. Previously they use to hide this poison since the labeling laws had loop holes.

What about Ray Audette, who eats a pound of bacon for breakfast and cooks his veggies in pork fat and yet has 6% BF and normal lipids? He's been eating this way for 18 years. He doesn't have good genetics, either.

Read all about it in http://www.allyourstrength.com/nutri...fatphobia.html

the body manufactures all of the saturated fats it needs, so technically you don't need to get any through the diet...the same goes with cholesterol
