The overall message I received here was sugar was bad. Yesterday I was told by someone that sugar has a lot of benefits and is necessary when bodybuilding. Is this true because I am currently staying away from sugars and if so, what are the benefits?

when to eat sugar? answer is NEVER. well almost never. unless you want to signal your body to store fat. what did mr. sugar tell you about the benefits of sugar? i am interested in hearing this one.

Depends how you define "sugar". Some take it to mean monosaccharides, other mono and disaccharides.

I would say the sugar glucose has about one benefit taken strategically, and fructose in small amounts has a couple of benefits.

Galactose is an ingredient to LeptiGen pII, but i've not had a chance to read up why exactly.

Sugar causes an insuline spike, insuline is a shuttle (transport mechanism for nutrients to both fat and muscle).

For hardcore dieters trying to avoid the big insuline spikes, they will tell you its "evil" to some extent.

Ill get back to you on what he said when I talk to him again, he said he definately wanted to talk to you about it though so I will transfer the info.

I tought sugar was good post workout

It depends on your goals and how clean you want your diet. IMO the spike is unnecessary during cutting

The answer is most definitely not "never"

After a workout its usually fine, unless you are cutting for competition or something.

A little bit of sugar from meal to meal (naturally in the foods you eat, not added) is a great way to cut the misery factor out of your life. If your body does not receive enough sugar...it will do the conversion internally. If sugar was not a necessity of living...why would your body convert proteins to sugar when there is a deficiency? Glucose is an extremely important nutrient for many functions involving your mind also.

And if you are bulking...remember sugar transports amino acids for muscle building as well. After a workout...this shuttling is very important. Whole fruits are an excellent source of the sugars you'd want to ingest after a workout.

The (average) brain requires somewhere in the region of 20g glucose/day.

The whole "carbohydrates are not essential" is totally dependant upon the individual actually eating sufficient protein.

You drop the protein, and besides probably getting really ill, the body will use straight glucose for brain functioning (depending on how much you're taking in each day).

From the carbs also, and the brain will run off ketones. Of course you'll be in a fucked up state after several days of eating pure fat for your diet with no protein or glucose.

If you eat nothing, in time, you die. Ain't life full of trade-offs?

That's not the whole picture, but it's the general gist.

You're confusing sugar with insulin.

Hmmm...banana, maybe, but not ideal. Fibrous and watery fruits aren't too brill alone during this time.

I suppose it depends upon your goals at the end of the day, but i can think of quite a few sources of carbohydrate i'd select before fruit.
