Sugar after workout

The guy that said not to eat brown rice, also said I need to eat sugar following a hard workout. I've cut sugar out of my diet (as much as possible). I want to gain some weight and put on muscle but it is my understanding I don't need sugar for that at anytime. He says right after a workout it is mandatory to eat sugar to replace whatever. Right now I have a protein drink w/flaxseed oil and an apple. He says not good enough. Help!?!

That is what I usually have after a workout. A whey protein shake with either apples or berries.

Rock you need to decide WHO you want to listen to. Berries or an apple is good and that is not sugar per say.

Sugar (dextrose) is good to get a post workout insulin spike to help drive creatine and protein into your muscles. That is it!

Jodi, it's not so much who I listen too. It's wanting to understand things. I still listen to you but I've heard many people say you need sugar post-workout and I go to get some flaxseed oil and this guy starts asking me about what I'm doing, so I tell him. I have nothing to say back when he tells me I'm doing it wrong and all this crap, so that's why I'm asking. I just want to understand why I am or am not doing what I'm doing compared to what other lifters are doing.

While cutting a PWO spike is not necessary.

Remember there are many ways of doing things and everyone has their opinion. I don't follow the PWO spike. If you wanted to bulk then I would lean more towards the spike but you want to drop bodyfat. There is no right or wrong answer, its opinions but you can't listen to half of what person says and listen to half of what another person says or you won't see results and your diet will be all screwed up.

There are many ways to get from point A to point B its finding YOUR quickest way to get there that matters.

OP I agree that you need sugar in you PWO shake unless you're doing CKD. Your PWO shake is the most important time to feed your muscles. I recommend you consume 0.2 grams of whey per pound of bodyweight, and 0.4 grams of high glycemic sugar per pound of bodyweight. There have been several studies which show this ratio causes the most muscle built with the least fat gained. If you're already going low carb (60 grams or under) then a PWO shake will not make you fat.

What did this guy look like, if he actually was living proof then take his advice. Personally I don't listen to the sales guys at the stores anymore. Not after I was told by a clerk that creatine is useless and only adds size to your muscles by holding water.

The guy actually was pretty built. Thats what makes me stop and pause, but he had a real cheesy personality and the attitude that there is only one way to do everything- his way.

I wouldn't listen to him

Any meat head can be big and stong and muscular

Size does not equal knowledge.

I would say it depends on your diet strategy. It's not necessary but I would suggest having more than some whey and an apple...IMO that is simply not enough calories to aif in recovery after a strenuous workout. Also save the flax for other times...I am not an advocate of high fat in the post workout meal...but I am also not an advocate of the PWO spike at anytime...for me anyway.

I would suggest having some whey but I think you need to have more with it than an apple....maybe some brown rice or some oats.

An apple along with whey mixed with berries would also be fine.

I believe that you should have sugar after your workout because it sends the nutrients to the muscles faster. That's why its an optimum time to take your creatine too. Fit Freak I agree save your high fats for anytime besides your PWO shake because that will slow the absorbtion rate of all the nutrients you want in your muscles.

Do the natural sugars in fruits (such as apples and berries) count? That is what I use in my post workout whey shakes.

Posted by: Jodi

I think they count yes. Many of us build muscle just fine without using dextrose or any other sugar derived delivery, myself included and P-Funk, Fit Freak, TJohn, Taz to name a few.

when I'm going to start working out again (gym), I'm thinking of having whey protein, some flaxoil and a banana or a pear for the fruit source, to add some muscles (high carbs and natural sugar) what you think jodi?

Sara we can discuss this when the time comes

ok

There are many ways to do things......There is no absolutly right way. You should try both and see how your body responds to each side of the coin. Try both a post w/oo insulin spike and no post w/o insulin spike for six weeks each. Keep a journal of your diet, training, bodyweight, how you feel and any other relevant information (how you look etc...). See which one worked best for you.

This is how I came to the conclusion that the post w/o spike was not necassary for me. I have journals with all my training and different diets that I have tried over the years. Now when I go to bulk or cut there si no question about it.....I know what works best for me.
