What to eat before morning workout?

(CLICK HERE here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,

I am a 36-year-old man who works out 4-5 times a week. I used to do weights mostly but have recently switched to cardio the last few months with a lighter weight training workout.

Doing so has cost me strength, especially since I do the cardio first. I am now working out in the mornings and do not eat breakfast. So I am REALLY weak in the gym.

To help battle the weakness I have started eating and drinking different things on the way to the gym, yogurt, bananas, sugared milks, but am being tempted by the drinks Gold's Gym (where I work out) sells.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I am thinking of switching to weights before cardio again to regain strength and I need some easily digestible energy that will not cramp me.

I will be reading through the forums in the next few days, but using a quick search was unable to find an answer so I apologize if this has been addressed.

I appreciate any help.

Thanks!

First of all you should always be lifting weights before cardio. Why waste your glycogen stores on cardio. Lift then cardio.

Second. A regular whey protein shakes and oats (even mixed together) is great before a workout.

Thirds whats with the yogurt, bananas & sugared milk and why would consume such things??

Fourth, what are your goals and I'm almost afraid to ask but what does the rest of your diet look like???

Welcome to IM

I have a Poptart before my morning workout. However, I don't recommend that. A protein shake would be a great option.

Because I was not doing cardio, so I moved it up and am just maintaining with my weights. But that is not working out well. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks! I will look that up on the site to see what that means and where to get the stuff. I have not made it past "Diet Soda's" yet!

I thought they would digest fast and give me energy. What is wrong with Banana's? Yogurt and sugared milk products I can see (Aren’t they the same?) but Banana's?

OK, I can see you are a lady, and probably not used to the language I am going to use here, so be warned! Whisper:

Taco Bell
Hamburger Helper
Stews
Roasts
Homemade soups
Hot Dogs
Lot's of diet Soda
Pop Tarts

I could go on but I think you already have stopped reading in disgust.

Thanks! Here is a pic (if it works), my goals are to thin up a little, upper chest needs work and I want biceps. I am not trying to compete or to be huge. I actually am trying to get a little smaller, but like fat you cannot spot lose.

Trying to give up the Tarts. I think the shake described below is the way!

This sounds like a winner! Since I do not want to try EFA yet can I do a diet coke?

I appreciate the advice everyone! I will start this next week, gotta' pick up the stuff this weekend. I am reading through the site for more info so I do not duplicate questions.

Ummmmm, yeeeahhhh!

I would suggest you start with some reading. Try Here First

Thanks Jodi, I am. Takes a lot of reading. I know a lot of it already. Like most people I know what I should NOT eat but I have the opinion that "Eating Healthy does not necessarily make you live longer, it just makes it FEEL that way!"

I think that this site has a lot of knowledge and ANY tips, like the shake, I come away with it is 100% win for me. Thanks for your help!

Bullet,

Just so you know EFA is 'Essential Fatty Acids'. So something like Flax Seed oil would be great with you shake.

Does the whey and oats taste good blended up? Well.. by good I mean palletable. Wouldn't it be really really thick?

I do (raw) oats, choc whey, peanut butter, it's chalky. But do able.
Add a dash of cinnamon. yum.

Welcome Bullet

I htink after yoo soak in some of the info here, you should try and start a journal. It will help you get all your questions answered and enable you to keep track of yourself as well.

But defiantely do the cardio AFTER the weights. What Jodi means by a protein shake is a scoop or two of protein powder mixed with water and oats. It is nice and light for prior to working out.

k ppl. Well I usually have shredded wheat before I work out (loads of carbs mmm), with full fat milk ( some protein and alot of fat), then when I am done with my work out, I usual go home and grab scrambled eggs toast and baked beans (and a rasher of bacon if I've been good all week mmmm bacon lol)

IainDaniel Thanks for the info!

SolidToTheCOREI think I may try that. I am using hot water right now and making a "gruel" seems to work GREAT! I am now eating it in the evenings as well as it is quite filling!

LeslieThanks! I am still reading. It will take weeks for me to modify my diet (I do not want to change too much too fast!) but I may try that when I get settled. This site is GREAT!

leg_pressI like shredded wheat. I am sticking with the oatmeal/whey which seems to work great! I just need to get up a little earlier now.

EverybodyThanks for all the info/help. I really appreciate it!
