how soon after a cycle do you start taking clomid and for how long do you take it?

It depends on what you were taking during your cycle. MOST of the time you wait 2-3 weeks after before you start. You can even look at how much you were doing since we are looking at half lives specifically.
As for how long to run it traditionally 2-4 weeks.

I would recommend it to virtually everybody, normally that is done your last 3 weeks of the cycle but in moderate doses (recommended) the estrogen spike will not be significant IMO.
HCG 500iu per day for 3 weeks is frequently the norm, some even run it once through the cycle (one week) OR by the 3rd week 500iu twice a week (long cycles). That would leave you needing 10,500iu @ 500iu 21 days.
Clomid normally
Day 1 300mg
Day 2 200mg
Day 3 100-150mg
Day 4-14 100mg
Day 15-28 50mg (if you run the 4 week plan)
With HCG in there I think 2-3 weeks of clomid will probably be fine for most people, but clomid alone IMO just isn't enough for some of us. While the LH response after a cycle is fast, its not nearly enough for some of us especially if you try a longer cycle OR a larger dosed one.
Fair amount of folks are using Nolvadex instead of HCG, while similar they are not the same so I'm not sure what to think about that.

WAR 96 claims that nolva can stimulate sperm production but I know there are errors in the book, and I have heard the argument that it does no such thing and that only clomid does (of the two).
Billy_Bathgate knows his stuff though so I somewhat follow what he suggests, and he is a Nolvadex man.
Wish HMG were easier to find but I have seen it virtually nowhere without an astronomical price attached, same places that sell 5000iu HCG for $139 or so.
