about a month ago i weighed in around 176 at 18% body fat and couldn't see any ab definition whatsoever... i maintained my diet and started doing cardio in the morning on an empty stomach... so far, i'm starting to see slight ab definition first thing in the morning but my weight is still staying around 175...
i think i once read as a rule of thumb 12% body fat is when ab definition comes into play... i wouldn't say i'm as low as 12% yet but i'd say i'm at least 15% or slightly lower...
is this an obvious indication that body fat is decreasing while lean body mass is increasing?
and finally, could somebody please tell me how quickly one should lose body fat in a healthy manner? i know it's about 1-2 lbs per week, but how long should it take to lose say 1% of body fat?
my goal is to have a 6 pack by christmas
thanks

Yep, if your bodyfat measurements are accurate, you are definately losing bf and gaining lean muscle! For a clearly visible six-pack you have to go down to 10% or lower! 1% bodyfat is around 2lbs of fat. If you lose 2lbs of fat per week you should be ok by X-mas! The slower you lose it the better!

It all depends, some people get under 7 and still don't have a sixer. Some six pack are visible at 13 even 15. So it really depend on your body. Just keep at it and keep your diet and training consistent and you'll get there.

this last little bit of body fat is being rather stubborn and doesn't seem to want to come off as fast as the first 25 lbs or so :P

i've lost 7kg of weight after 5 weeks of cutting (last 3 weeks i've been on fat burning supps.)
i'm worried some of that is muscle, i've lost some size around the top of my chest, t-shirts just ain't fitting as well as they were (this week i've really cut the carbs down)
thing is, i'm lifting bigger than i was 5 weeks ago!
i don't understand, i'm stronger but i'm a bit smaller, i will get another reading soon, but this is my recent progress...
9/9/03 -
Weight = 83.2kg (btw I was just coming off creatine at this point)
BF = 12.2%
9/28/03 -
Weight = 81.8kg
BF = 13.7% (dunno why my BF went up here! it was a real shock to me, but oh well it did, maybe to do with water)
10/8/03 -
Weight = 79.1
BF = 11%
is this a cause for concern?
peace

would water effect body fat readings at all though?
i don't see why it would... water isn't fattening and water is water and fat is fat, no?

Young D, if you are worried about losing muscle then the last thing you should be doing is cutting carbs.
Skib, water should not affect bodyfat %. You have to make sure that the same person is doing the test each time, if not it will not be acurate.
