Protein question

I am 22 and have been lifting for a few years now. I have never taken any supplements before and was thinking about trying protein. I was just wondering what types and brands of protein everyone else uses and when is the best time of day to take them. Thanks.

Chris

Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protien... That's what I like ; here:

Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey Protein contains 22 grams of protein, only 2-3 grams of carbohydrates, 1.5 grams of fat and minimal lactose, the choice of brand is clear, now to decide what flavor and size! Optimum's 100% Whey Protein comes in 1, 2, 5 and 10 pound sizes and is available in Double Rich Chocolate, Chocolate Mint, Pina Colada, Strawberry and Vanilla

www.optimumnutrition.com

Muscle Tech's NitroTech isn't bad either.. But FUCK MUSCLETECH

get some Maxi-Muscle Promax, its the best whey protein shake IMO

www.maximuscle.com

If not that... get some MET-RX protein plus, and 'inflate yo chest!'

I have a protein shake with breakfast for added protein, post work-out (whey only), and before bed (egg/casein).

price what do ya have in the morning?

The fact remains: NO SINGLE SOURCE OF PROTEIN IS GOOD FOR YOUR GOALS! So 100% Whey-->Go to Hell, And so do Pure Whey Isolate.(Because it lacks in important Sub-Fractions which are crucial in your growth and Gh Release).
For Best result, Go for Blended Proteins (Whey Isolates, Hydrolysates, Egg Albumins, Micellar Casein)
Some of the BEST Protein Blends are ISS Research Matrix, ProPeptide by Dorian Yates, Biotest GROW....
And Remember, Best Proteins will never taste Best!

Thanks for the information everyone! Also can whey protein be taken throughout the day or should it only be used post workout? Would i be better off going with a blended protein that i can take at any time of the day? If so would I still take the protein on my off days? Sorry about all the questions but I am really interested in your opinions. There's so much conflicting information everywhere.

Here's the thing: The Best Protein Blend will Contain following: Whey Isolate/Hydrolysate, Micellar Casein & Egg Albumin.
Even if you take protein blend immediately after exercise, "Whey Isolate/Hydrolysate" will be the first ones to shoot inside your muscle and work for couple of hours when combined with simple carbohydrates. Egg Albumin will take care of your muscles for 3-4 hours. Its is also very high in Amino Acid Cysteine. Micellar Casein will take care of your muscles uptp 8 hours after exercising, i.e. When you go to sleep.
In short, in Protein Blend, All the ingredients and Protein Sources work Synergystically and take the Guesswork out of the equation which means that you get meximum results.

MetRx makes a good one that contains both Casein and Whey.
The Casein is kind of like time released and good for night time, while the Whey enters the bloodstream quicker which is great post workout.
A good combo if you ask me.
Right now I'm using the Optimum whey, it's a great price and I mix it with milk which gives me some longer lasting protein as well.

Sorry, i didn't realize Testosterone just said the same thing.

Posted by: Testosterone

Yeah, According to my Experience, Met-Rx, Dorian Yates Approved, ISS Research make the best Protein Blends!

Why go for 100% Whey then? It's slightly better that you go with milk+whey.
Better yet, try mixing some fiber with your last meal alongwith Milk & Whey. A heavy fiber diet before going to the bed will significantly slow down the release of amino acids during your sleep. That's exactly what you want from your night protein!

Met-Rx rules

I also wanted some beverly international stuff but can't find it anywhere in the UK, apparently they are very good

peace

IF you're in UK, what better line to get than Dorian Yates Approved ProPeptide!
As I told you ProPeptide, Beverly, ISS and Met-Rx manufacture THE BEST PROTEINS ON PLANET!

100% Whey and Pro Complex from Optimum Nutrition and are both good sources of protein.

100% Whey before workout.
Pro Complex after workout

Posted by: Testosterone

You got it all wrong!
If I were to choose a choose after workout that would have been essentially a Pure Whey Protein Isolate + BCAA Powder, NOT PRo Complex.

Secondly there's no need to feed with 100% Whey before workout. All you need is High Glycemic Index Carbs.

As far as nighttime protein goes, that has to be Miceller Casein Type of which I think Met-Rx/ISS/Dorian Yates is the best choice.

BTW Pro Complex doesn't compare to best blended proteins labelwise.

I'm not sure everyone will agree with that. It's what works for me

Posted by: Testosterone

Yeah, it's true.
You may be Optimum Brand Loyalist whereas I'm more of MetRx/Dorian Yates Approved one!

Posted by: KataMaStEr

After workout a blend of protein is best. Fast and slow absorbed proteins for recovery. The last protein I would use after workout alone is Whey Isolate as it is absorbed to quick. Before workout is fine. Thats what I go by

Posted by: 2little

Thanks for the info everyone!!

Posted by: Testosterone

You may want to split your Protein into 2 servings Post-Workout. Immediately Post-Workout should be your BCAA Powder+Whey Isolate. After an hour so you should take Blended Protein.
BCAA's are typically loaded with Leucine which does the bulk of work in building new muscle fibre.

post workout you need a combination of whey and either dextrose or maltodextrin, for fast delivery to your muscles!

whey is superior post workout as it gets to your muscles fast, and that is what you want post workout!

i say whey in morning and pre/post WO's
mixture during day and before bed
or alternativly eat something with the whey if you have it during the day to slow digestion

peace
