Protein problem

For some reason I am allergic to Whey protein. I can drink milk, eat ice cream cheese etc. as much as I want and I have no problems. If I eat whey protein I get bad stomach problems aka the squirts. This was awhile ago and I am lifting again. I am afraid to try whey again and I NEED to find a good protein powder to take.

I have been using Soy protein powder, but I have read some bad things about using it for weight training compared to whey. What are my choices if I am still unable to take whey?? Is egg protein the next best thing to whey or what?? Any suggestions would be great, I don't want to waste my time with the wrong supplements.

I switched to egg/whey combo. It is okay to use. You may want to try an isolate, but if egg is ok than I would just go with that.

Now your sure your not washin the Whey down with Beer are ya Cause if your drinking lots of beer that will cause that problem.

Posted by: Micker

Hehe, no beer with my whey . Is egg protein pretty close to whey for bodybuilding purposes?

Posted by: Randy

Well I could be wrong, but I believe that if it is a supplement, whether it is egg protein or not shouldn't matter to much.
The key is making sure you satisfy the protein requirement for your body weight. For bodybuilding take at least 1 gram protein to each pound of bodyweight. Since that total is sometimes hard to achieve, people use supplements such as the famous whey.
You setup a schedule where you can ingest about 45-50 grams of protein every 2 hours or so until you reach your limit. You achieve this by combining supplemental protein with natural food protein. It does get a bit more complicated, but that is the basics.. There is slow protein and fast protein. You want to take a slower protein at night when you sleep so it stays with you longer. At night you eat stuff like cottage cheese since it is more of a slow protein. Now I believe I explained that correctly... someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Any protein is good for bbders. Whey and egg are two different types of protein and have a different BV value(means that it will take longer to get to your blood. no biggie it will still get there. As far as AA both are complete. Its just a little slower digesting.

Posted by: Mudge

BV is biological value, which means how much can be utilized - not how fast.

Whey can be utilized in water in about 20 minutes I have read, egg (albumin) can last about 4-5 hours and milk protein (casein) can last about 7 hours.

Whey gets a BV of above 100, because 100 was given to egg protein as at that time there was nothing better.

Posted by: Randy

So then it is like I said, There is fast protein and slow protein.
During the day you take the fast protein so your body can consume about 45-50 grams in 2 hours. Then at night when you go to bed you want the slow stuff that stays with you... Like the egg (albumin) or the Protein (casein) right?

huh, I was under the assumption that the BV was the absorbtion time. Caesin was the slowest like you said and whey is rated at a 100.

Posted by: Mudge

I believe the last time I saw whey on a BV chart it was at 108, but I dont recall. Like I said it was created long before whey protein existed, so egg was put at 100, milk I believe is 77.

Digestion slows down at night so I dont know how critical it is for a super slow protein, but if I use a powder then casein would be it, some people like a milk/egg mix.

Biological value, not absorbtion time, it has to do with how much of the protein is actually useable when digested.

Whey is probably good for morning, pre/post workout.

Posted by: Randy

Wow! Mudge. Looks like you put on a lot of weight since I last seen ya

Posted by: Mudge

Its all in the hips.

Posted by: Micker

So egg protein would be>Soy for me you think?? I just read somethings about estrogen production and soy protein.

Posted by: Mudge

Supposedly it is not soy itself, but processed soy - which means any soy you will get your hands on probably (certainly a powder).

The soy craze died down about 10 years ago, and it wasn't around for that long. It was also by far the worst tasting protein powder I have ever had, including non flavored milk, and milk/egg combo.

whats the problem with soy protein ? i use it all the time .. is that bad ?

Posted by: Randy

To make Mudges long drawn out story short ..... Soy is a poor source of protein.. Use Whey instead.. Get large tub very cheap at cosco.

Posted by: Mudge

6 pounds for $19.99 at the Costco here.

Posted by: Randy

Yep, in fact may be a buck or 2 cheaper here.. But even at 19.99 for 6lbs....I challenge anyone to find it any cheaper than that
You can compare the same stuff for like 30 bucks or more.

Posted by: Mudge

$3.33 a pound is hard to beat, anywhere. Its not the best tasting (both chocolate and vanilla are pretty rich), but its cheap.

Posted by: Randy

And "CHEAP" is a good thing

Posted by: Jodi R

uh ja.. thanks, except i'm in south africa where whey is pretty expensive.

Posted by: Randy

Try mail order Jodi ..

Posted by: PreMier

Try lanas egg whites. They come in a big ass bucket. I would definately take this over soy protein... Also recomended by Jay Cutler.

Posted by: Jodi R

ooo boy you gonna have a fun time... egg protein: i tried that before .. it mixes kak, all lumpy. tastes like shit ... and gives you gas.

ah boo.

not very filling either. the soy protein i use is delicious and its thick like pudding.

Posted by: PreMier

Like I stated above, use WHITES not the protein from the store. Just fry them in a pan with low fat cooking spray such as PAM.

This way you wont get rotten egg gas LoL

Posted by: Jodi R

oops sorry, it sounded like a supplement. i've never seen egg whites in a big ass bucket

i think south africa is classified as third world ... well if its not, it should be.

Posted by: PreMier

No problemo...

Here is the site http://www.lanaseggwhites.com/

Sounds like a great way to go for the person on the go that don't have time to peel their own hard boiled eggs.

While I agree that natural protein is better than supplemental protein, most still need supplements to satisfy their high daily protein requirement. Now I start with egg whites in the morning. I eat 7-10 egg whites... with my 7 gram monster eggs I get 3.9 grams a white. The thing for me though, is sometimes it can be a challenge to stomache all 7-10. I still manage to do it though. But even taking all of the 7 eggs your only getting about 27.3 grams.. This again is great for like the morning, but you still need like a protein supplement during the day to satisfy most peoples requirements..

Posted by: PreMier

Those eggs arent too big then... I get around 5-7 grams of protein per white. I also eat 7 whites, 2 yolks in the morning. They are VERY hard to stomach...

Posted by: Randy

PreMier,

Eggs are deceiving... they say that one egg equals 6-7 grams depending on the egg size. The fact of the matter however, is that when you remove the yoke, you remove nearly half the protein. So like I said, an extra large 7 gram egg minus the yoke is only 3.9 grams of protein.

Posted by: PreMier

I was getting my information from the site I listed earlier. You are right though. My egg carton says around that and after I remove the yolk, im sure some protein goes with it.

Posted by: Randy

Yeah, again I think the marketing idea is great to bundle egg whites, but seems a bit expensive. I get like 5 cartons of 18 count eggs at cosco for like 5.00 dollars. So with that 5.00 I get 90 egg whites... You probably don't get near half that for the 24.00 you pay for that jar.

Posted by: PreMier

Prob not... But I really dont care

Posted by: SJ69

I don't know, some may think I'm crazy, but sometimes I lift for months without using a protein powder, especially when I'm low on cash.
A quart of milk ($.99) has 32g of protein. One for breakfast, one before bed and there you have 64g. Throw in 2 cans of tuna for lunch now you're up to over 120g and we didn't even talk dinner or mid day snack yet.

Posted by: PreMier

LoL, yea I drink tonz of milk and eat tonz of tuna. Albacore only... the otherkind makes me gag

It SHOULD be obvious, why? Because what is the yolk, it is a future baby chick. What are animals made out of in bulk, proteins.

Protein of the entire egg: 6.25
Protein of just the Yolk is 2.85
Just the white: 3.5

Yeah PreMier,
