what exactly does too much sodium do to your muscles?

Posted by: P-funk

it helps you retain water.

to much and it helps you have a high blood pressure.

speaking of this post, How much soduim is enough in a day..I need this water retention thing. (I have to visit the bathroom at least 6 times during work)

the recommended amount of sodium is 500mg a day !!

i consider sodium a viceral enemy of mine, so i try to keep it under 250mg a day

500mg is LOW!! and I wouldnt reccomend going that low, you need some sodium naturally in your diet for bodily functions, and the fluid retention in your muscles cells will help to keep them hydrated and full.
I eat approx 2000mg a day.. look at it this way, 10egg whites have over 500mg. low sodium tuna has 100mg. 1scp protein powder has 40-60mg.

jen thats fucking crazy !!!!!!! no other way to put it

2000mg of sodium is insane, i would keep it under 500mg.

vascular, blood pressure and heart problems later in life are not worth whatever benefits you "think" you are getting from that ungodly amount of sodium !!!!!

Posted by: atherjen

2000mg or a lil less is NOT crazy! I dont salt my foods, they are naturally occuring. I dont see one problem in consuming this amount, its never more then that and could be a bit lower. compared to fast food places and people that are eating processed junk all the time, I think Im in a better position with nothing to worry about.

Posted by: atherjen

and just to note I do NOT have any problems with blood pressure now, its actually VERY low. 96/51, give or take a couple each time

Posted by: BigBallaGA

to each their own, i take in less than 500mg and still think its too high !!

if you take in 2grams per day and think that its healthy than its your decision. but remember that you are comparing yourself to slobs who are eating fast food, probably the worst people to judge your diet by !!!!!!!!

balla-
where do you get 500mg as the recommended value from?

FDA recommends no more than 2400mg for a 2000 cal diet. 500 is really, really low. Why do you fear sodium so much?
What do you eat that you can take in that little sodium?

I agree with atherjen. Sodium comes naturally in foods. On a healthy diet without ever picking up the salt shaker or using sauces, your gonna be consuming more than 250-500mg of sodium.

a 6 oz. can of tuna has 240mg.
