Hi folks

In short..

I've been a vegetarian for 7 years now and I eat as healthy and balanced a diet as possible.

I actually turned veggie as a bet at uni ("bet you can't do it for more than three months" were the words that started me off) .

However, I've been training for just over a year now and I'm not really seeing enough gains for the work I'm putting in (I'm 12st and 5'9").
I'm nicely toned etc, but I certainly need to bulk out.

Many people ( at the gym etc) have suggested that eating meat and fish would certainly benefit me..

What do you all think ??????

what Kinda Meat and fish??

All advive warmly appreciated )

I personally think that eating meat is a near necessary part of a healthy diet. Definitely fish, a fair amount of chicken, and perhaps a little beef. In that order IMO. Turkey, etc is also welcome on the list.

What kinds of fish? Fresh salmon and tuna (not canned if you can afford it), and stuff like that.

i believe that since you have been a vegetarian for such a long time that your body will not react to well to starting up eating meat again, but if you can get by the first part ok then you should be good to go

Fish! Oh brother, science says even asians should eat 3x more fish to get thier fish oil intake up. Westerners supposedly eat about 1/10th an optimum quanity.

I would take it slowly though as your body will take awhile probably to start digesting meat again without problems.

Yeah, and fish is the easiest to digest... so a veggie would probably have the best time starting off with it

Yeah, I have to admit red meat in volume bothers me these days (I'm talking ~4 pounds though )

thanks guys ! what Fish and meat would you really reccommend ?

Meat, I would imagine good loin and chicken breast?

Also, what would be the most effective and fat-free ways to prepare both meat and fish??

thanx

Baked... or on the barbeque. If you do it in bulk like some of us do, then the oven is definitely the way to go. We just cook for a whole week and then freeze it

Fish -
Salmon
Tuna
Tilapia

Fishes that are high in Omega 3s

Chicken breast - Just trim fat off and cook. A foreman grill is an excellent way to go if you can it really keeps the juices in nicely and is easy to clean up

Steaks - Just choose cuts that dont have much excess fat, and the same with pork. A nice pork loin or something.

I don't know about anyone else, but the Foreman grills are one of the best products to hit the market in years. I've had the big one for a few years now and still use it all the time. I imagine the little personal size one is perfect for singles and people in dorms.

These cuts are pretty lean. Then again, I still eat the occasional Porterhouse steak. (Not the leanest cut, but definately one of my favorites).

Chicken breast
Eye Round
Top Round
Round tip
Top Sirlion
Bottom Round
Top Loin
Tenderloin

Of the fish that eggs listed, Talapia is one of my favorites. Tasty, and fairly common and cheap. (I don't eat Tuna anymore due to my concerns about the amount of mercury in it. I also don't eat Salmon as much anymore due my concerns about the waters they are raised in).

i have know alot of vegitarians and vegans that have tried meat and all i have to say is take it real slow, and be prepared for the runs and stomach cramps (like indegestion)a buddy of mine was vegan since he was born. his parents were vegan so the raised him like that. well one night he wanted a veggie burger on the grill and the guy grilling thought it would be funny to give him a real burger. well he took one bite realized it was meat (he hadnt even eaten a product made with anything that came from an animal in over 30 years) well for the next two days the onlytime he got out of bed was to shit&puke. so take it slow and easy. dont go to outback and order a 20oz porterhouse rare. stick with fish and chicken untill your stomach can handle more. i know alot of vegitarians that eat a ton of fish and some chicken but still consider themselves vegitarians because they dont eat red meat. good luck and be careful

Hi, Adie --
If you are attached to being veggie (and/or kind of averse to meat) you might want to check out this guy's site:
Steve Holt, the Vegetarian Bodybuilder He seems to do okay.

I was vegetarian -- really vegetarian, none of those fish or chickens with leaves and roots -- for ten years, and vegan for three of those. I started eating meat again three years ago, and didn't have any digestive difficulties at all. Y'know, be careful and all that, but if you eat any animal protein at all (eggs/dairy) you'll probably be okay.

Personally, I started out with cans of tuna and those frozen skinless boneless chicken breasts in bags. It wasn't the digestion that was the problem, it was dealing psychologically with all the meaty bits, fat and sinews and veins and things.

Adie, saying that mate, apparently vegitarian alternatives such as tofu, and soya. Tobey Maguire used those when he was bluking up for Spider-Man in his latest one Spider- Man2, because he's a veggies, and he didn'tt even eat eggs. lmao. So if you wanna stick veggie then go for it
