What do I need to do to faint ?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Vieope

It never occured to me, I guess I canīt faint that easily. I have some friends that faint for anything.

What causes someone to faint ?

Posted by: DrChiro

lack of oxygen to the brain is the usual cause of fainting

basically you get low blood pressure....the blood and oxygen cant make it ALL the way up to your head so your body passes out and "makes" you lay down so that the blood has an easier time making it to the brain.....at least that is one theory.

Posted by: DrChiro

i would say dont TRY and faint.....probably not the best idea (even if it is fun at parties)

Posted by: Vieope

Lack of oxygen, interesting ..

What happens when someone faints because they get scared ? It happens instantly. I guess this time oxygen is not responsible.

Posted by: DrChiro

basically when you get scared your sympathetic nervous system kicks into high gear (fight or flight response)....this causes vasoconstiction of many vessels and can cause a decrease in blood and oxygen to the brain...basically it is shock...that is why people look pale when they are in shock...and where they get the saying "scared white as a ghost"...lack of blood.

there are neurological reasons you can faint..but they are not as common...and of course there is "getting knocked out" which is totally different.

Posted by: KiDNotorious

some dumb@$$' at school would choke each others windpipes which would cause you to "faint" for a very brief time...... it IS dangerous, some kid had a seizure

What is the best martial arts ? I was about to do a thread for this and you show up I am considering in starting one.

the one that is effective for you.

I really donīt have time to try them all. Kung fu is not a option because it takes forever.
I want the best. I heard about one from Israel and one from Japan, samurai training.

Posted by: PreMier

Brazilian ju jitsu. Or mui thai.

Depends what your good at.. Ju Jitsu is grappling, where as Mui Thai is striking.

Posted by: Vieope

Running away from jiu-jitsu. It is so popular and doesnīt have the best reputation here.

Posted by: Burner02

that's a nice combo.....if I had the time, that iswhat I would do.

But seriously. Look it up.
If you dont' wanna grapple, then not jui jitsu.
Kung fu is good, but artsy.
boxing is basic
what do you think you would like? basic power moves?
complex multi-strike moves? all legs, no legs? etc...like I said..whatever is most effective for you
What works for some, may not be for the next guy...

Posted by: PreMier

If you watch Pride or UFC the Ju Jitsu fighters are some of the best there is.

Take Mui Thai then. Its Thai kickboxing. Very good fighting style for strikers.

Posted by: PreMier

What do you mean?

Posted by: Vieope

If you punch somebody in a very sensible place, like throat or back of the head. Is that possible that death may occur ?

If you hit anyone in the throat and they arent prepared, you could collapse their wind pipe, and cause death. Dont know of other places... maybe if you elbowed or kneed someone in the side if the head(temple).

Posted by: Vieope

Since you are such a street fighter fan.. Do you remember what kind of martial arts each one of them performed ?

shh...by day, I am a mild mannered IM post whore, but in the blink of an eye, I turn into...
dun-tuh-dahhhhhhh!
S U P E R B U R N E R !!!!!!!
Foiling villians feindish plots, helping damsels in distress! (my favorite part)
and helping old ladies cross the street.

Only known weaknesses:
Great food and hot women..seem to stop our hero dead in his tracks in a stuttering, eyes-glazed over imp.

In out last episode, we saw our hero drawn into a Texan strip club with a buffet line. It seems almost hopelss! How will he ever escape? Will he want to? Tune in next week.....

Maui Thai and BJJ together....there is a reason most of the MMA champs of the world are Brazilian Vieope!!!!!

Instead of MT you could do a generic kickboxing, but what is important is to get good stand-up skills. On the ground BJJ or GJJ will take care of that side of it. Good old wrestling will cover take-downs if you want to go that far.

Posted by: DrChiro

If I were you I would look into Jeet Kune Do...it is really more of a philosophy than a style and is what I chose to practice after years of karate and tae kwon do.

I do feel that it is the best martial art because it incorporates ALL martial arts and basically says "use what works for YOU"....I competed in numerous no holds barred competitions several years ago and did quite well with my Jeet Kune Do skills....the other martial arts didnt help so much.

Muai Thai sucks in my opinion...iut is hardcore training to make your body into a machine that can take alot of punnishment....id rather spend my time learning how to kick someone elses ass rather than kicking my own ass over and over again during training just to increase the amount of pain I can take....i love it when they stand in the corner and just kick the shit out of each other....take the man down and choke his ass!

you do want to be proficient in all ranges of fighting and Jeet Kune Do covers all of that...especially trapping range which alot of arts dont cover...use what works...not what looks pretty..that is what Jeet Kune Do is all about.

Posted by: DrChiro

i like how this was a fainting thread and now it is a martial arts thread...tangents are cool.

but I thought I have read that there are a lot of 'hacks' out there that are not actual 'certified' JKD instrtuctors out there?
isn't it hard to find the real instructors?

Posted by: DrChiro

yes, this is true...just do your research.

me teachers were larry hartsell (original student of bruce lee)
and eric paulson (student of larry hartsell, shootfighting champ)

if you need to find an instructor call Dan Inosanto's academy in california and see if he can refer you to a qualified instructor in your area.

lots of people go about JKD the wrong way so it is a good idea to be cautious like you said.

Posted by: DrChiro

paul vunak's tapes are usually pretty good too if you want to invest in something you can watch at home...not a good idea to make them your only source of info, but they are a good supplement.

i went to a few seminars with him and he is awesome....he was the hand to hand and knife fighting instructor for the navy seals for a while...takes out alot of the BS and gives it to you straight.

Everyone reacts differently to different ways of training ( and with MA different teachers, which is perhaps the most important thing ).....how many different BB workouts are there? They all work to some degree, and there will be some that take ones that are generally though of as ineffective, and be exceptions to the rule.

Try out a few and see what you like. The individual is more important than the style.

Posted by: DrChiro

I once had it explained to me like this by a well respected martial arts master when I asked him which art was best.

"think of mastery of a martial art as a path to the top of a mountain...once you get there, looking down, you can see all the other paths that lead to the top....they may take different routes, but they all lead to the same place."

basically he was saying...find an art you like and be the best at it that you can be...if you do that you cant go wrong.

Posted by: kuso

DC....which NHB/MMA comp did you fight with?

hey...I said the same thing....
I am wise beyond my years...

Posted by: supertech

I'm thinking of joining a martial arts class.Something that helps you in a real street fight.I am 5'6 so I got a disadvantage of going up against a larger size guy.

What would you guys suggest.

I am thinking of brazilian JJ.......That is probable the best

Posted by: DrChiro

brazilian JJ is GREAT in the MMA competitions...in a real streetfight it isnt so good IMO.....you dont want to be wrestling around with some dude for 10 min trying to get him in a choke while his friend cracks you in the head with a beer bottle.....a good striking/trapping art is better in that case...if it does go to the ground some BJJ skills are good to have.....this is why I think JKD is still the best in a real situation.

Posted by: DrChiro

kuso...i fought in a few tournaments in a circuit known as the south eastern no holds barred association...it was formed around the time UFC III was held, so its OLD and no longer exists....back when I was into the competition arena, it wasnt as big or as organized as it is today....i wish i had time to get back into it now!

Correctamoondo! If you want to street fight, then BJJ is NOT a good choice.

But if you are much stronger than your opponent, you would have a slight advantage with him on the ground, and BJJ teaches you how to get him in a choke hold or whatever right away.So you wont have to wrestle around with him.
Most street fights,at least the ones i have seen, have ended up with the 2 guys on the ground.
But I guess if your good and fast enough you can knock him out in the first few seconds.

Any how I will look into Jet Koon Do(sp?)

Posted by: Vieope

We agree on what for steet fighting ?

Posted by: PreMier

Mui Thai. Or any other striking combat IE: Shotokan

Posted by: Vieope

I will look for this Shokotan ..
Is is possible to learn a martial arts by a book ?

Posted by: cappo5150

What discipline did Mr. Miagi teach Daniel-san, that wax on wax off stuff?

Posted by: DrChiro

it is true that if you are more skilled in BJJ you will be able to put your opponent in a hold faster in most cases....but you are still in a compromising position, especially if he has "friends" around.

also, short of choking him till he his unconciouss or breaking a limb...it is hard to get an opponent to submit...."tapping out" doesnt end a streetfight.....at least if you knock him out, or knock the wind out of him, or break his nose he is unable/unwilling to continue fighting.

Posted by: DrChiro

please dont get me wrong...you do need ground fighting skills just in case it heads that direction.....I just dont believe it is the "end-all-be-all" art that people seem to think it is because of the UFC competitions.

in all honesty, just knowing a few basic ground moves really well is enough IMO....they are relatively easy to use and apply and can be added to any style of martial arts....you may not be able to beat ken shamrock but your average pain in the ass drunk bastard doesnt stand a chance!

Posted by: Dale Mabry

I got the shit beat out of me when I took a fight to the ground. I took the guy down after he sucker punched me at a club (For what reason I have no idea) and threw in my legs (What you MMAers call a rear mount. I started pounding him in the back of the head repeatedly. By repeatedly I mean twice because within a second 4 of his friends played a game of soccer with my head. I really wished I would have been knocked out because they each got in like 3 kicks before the bouncers got to them. I got a broken nose and a chipped tooth out of the deal and got to feel each of their shoe laces scrape across my face. For some reason I never got a black eye, despite the focus on my face and head.

Posted by: DrChiro

exactly what i mean Dale....unless you know for sure that this guy doesnt have friends around dont take him to the ground...it opens you up to becoming a human "soccer ball" like you said.

sometimes you dont have a choice in the matter...you may find yourself on the ground despite your best efforts no to go there...but if it were me i would try and get up again as soon as possible and remember to always monitor your surroundings, try to keep your back to a wall if possible so that you cant get jumped from the rear....street fighting is a hell of alot different than sport fighting...lots more to worry about, not to mention the fact that you can't "tap out" if you are getting your ass kicked!

also when you are on the ground your opponent may gain access to a knife that they may keep hidden in their pocket or boot and you may never see him get it if you are wrestling around with him....but you will sure as hell feel it when he jams it between your ribs....i always carry a tactical folder when i go to clubs....wrestle with me on the ground and see what happens.

well, the Lamborgini is in the shop...gas prices are high anyway....and for some reason, law enforcement officials tend to frown at people driving 180mph.....
so I will have to reluctantly decline..
