Biggest Busts in the NBA!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: camarosuper6

Flex beat me to the punch, but its Sunday, and here for a new week is my weekly NBA poll.

Your starting 5 ( and a complete bench if u want) of the biggest busts and "where are they nows?" (meaning were SUPPOSED to be great, but didnt turn out that way). They dont have to be the ALL TIME biggest busts, because simply their are too many to even know of, but here are some of my big busts and why I they suck.

Guard- Harold Minor

Wow, this guy wins a dunk contest, gets a fat contract and completely dissapears from the face of the earth never to be heard from again. They called him baby Jordan.... thats just a sick joke.

Guard - Jason Williams

Stupid looking white guy trying to be ghetto makes flashy passes and more turnovers than any guard in the league. One decent year and everyone jumps on his jock, next thing you know hes just another white guy trying to get an NBA job.

Forward- Marcus Camby

Number Two pick in the draft for what... a decent 6th man? He was excellent in college and MERELY average in the pro's IF that.

Foward- Christian Laetner

Wow, he hit a big shot a Duke, played great college ball and even got to be on the DREAM TEAM. The next 10 years or so he did all of absolutely nothing other than take up space on a roster and occasionally score 12 or 13 points a game. Way too much hype, way too little production.

Forward- Danny Ferry

Sure he was great to watch on the Spurs hitting those 40 foot 3 pointers, but for a number 2 pick, did he really do anything? I cant remember he ever scoring over 25 points in a game in his entire career, and his defense was worse than mine. I love the guy, and he was tough, but he should have not been number 2, maybe number 200?

Forward- Joe Smith.

Another number 1 pick who was undersized at center in college and it caught up to him in the NBA. Now he tries to play forward, well, actually he just tries to play. Sitting on the bench being the next Marcus Camby isnt much to brag about in my book.

Center -Raef Lafrenz

Whats up with these big white guys from rich schools? Super hyped in college, now hes a "defensive specialist" which basically means all he can do is get a few rebounds, block a shot here and there and hack the oppsing center until he runs out of fouls. Boooo....

Center- Shawn Bradley

Give me a break. This draft class of 93 was super hyped, and kind of fell off, but he was picked ahead of Penny Hardaway.. (who could make the list too if you really think about it). Manute Bol's ivory image, he shot the ball better than Bol, but thats about it. Good for a goofy block and an occasional rebound, remember, hes gotten dunked on more times than any player in NBA history.

C- Ralph Sampson

I really dig Ralph, who in the first few years was a huge force in Houston, and basically had knee problems that caused his demise. He was unreal in college( and I mean UNREAL WITH SKILLZ). But all that hype turned out to make Ralph nothing more than a traveling man, being with 3 or 4 different NBA teams sitting his 7'4 frame on the bench. I love the guy, but he was never even CLOSE to his potential, which was basically the sky.

Center- The Late Yinka Dare

May he rest in peace, but he may have been the worst NBA center EVER. (Yes, even worse than Manute Bol and Sam Bowie). He was the only center in NBA history to start and never record one single assist. He avg. under 2 pts a game in 9 years and only 2 rebounds. A big time "prospect" was labeled by one coach as "horrible". Ouch.

Forward- Keith Van Horn

OK OK.. I know hes not that bad. Hes actually good. But rememeber he was compared to Tim Duncan during his rookie year and was almost the number one pick. He was number 2, and now hes a 6th man. Just not enough for his potential IMO.

Forward- Samaki Walker

The one thing (and only thing) I like about the Lakers is the fact they took him off of San Antonios hands. He has hands like bricks and feet like stone, and he was a top pick in the draft. Hes a good guy, and not a bad addition for the bench on any team, but he was a Top 10 pick in the draft and highly hearlded.
Bummer man.

Ok.. lets see what yall got

Posted by: Flex

this is tough, cuz i mean 90% of the guys that make it to the NBA never become "superstars", but there are bigtime college players that do suck in the NBA.

i don't agree with Sampson, J. Williams, Camby and Van Horn, but hey, you got your opinion

i was gonna say Laetner, prob. the biggest bust EVER. one of the best college players ever, and did nothing in the NBA.

i'd also include Bill Walton (another one of college's greatest who did shit in the NBA).

and who was the guy who was picked #1 ahead of Jordan (who went 2nd)? his name just won't come to me, but you KNOW that guy was a bust haha.

Sam Bowie.

Posted by: camarosuper6

It was Olajuwan 1
Sam Bowie 2
Jordan 3

BOWIE AHEAD OF JORDAN.

Oh da GOds MuSt BE CRrAzy!

Posted by: I'm Trying

I didn't know Yinka Dare past away. What happened to him?

Posted by: camarosuper6

I dont remember exactly, I believe he had some kind of medical problem. It was fairly recent.. within the past few months I believe.

Posted by: gr81

I got a great one for you!! one of my hometown originals, Shawn Kemp

Has the potential ot be one of teh best PF in the game, was on his way there, and the alcohol and weight problems caught up to him! In eth early 90's he was in teh top three behind Malone and Barkley as far as PFs go, and his vertical and explosivness was unmatched in the NBA. For anyone who remembers, in the '96 Bulls/Sonics finals, Kemp was THE best player on the court, and that includes MJ himself. Then he got traded to Cleveland a itwas all downhill from there

Posted by: camarosuper6

GR8 one you are correct. The only reason I didnt think about him was because he wasnt drafted high or anything. He actually was an overachiever as far as that went, but your right. He had so much going for him and he BLEW IT.

Definitely should have been on my list!

Posted by: gr81

Man I used to love watching him play, he was so explosive it was amazing!he really did have so much potential dude

Posted by: Flex

Wow, Shawn Kemp. forgot about that dude. nice! haha

i still have an old school real Kemp jersey thast home-white with the green stripe across the front with big white Supersonics letters hahahahah. great jerz.

Posted by: I'm Trying

What about Jay Williams. Dumb ass has to ride a motorcycle and crash into a poll.

Posted by: I'm Trying

Notice that Duke puts out players who are always injured. Ie, Grant Hill, Jay Williams. Name some players from Duke that have done anything though??
Well maybe Elton Brand.

Posted by: I'm Trying

Lets add Bobby Hurley to the bust list too.

Posted by: aztecwolf

the clippers, the whole team

wasn't that the dude who went like a year without having an assist or something like that? i think it was him and it was some way out there stat

Posted by: aztecwolf

i wouldn't really consider shawn kemp a bust, he had a couple good years early in his career, before he decided to have like 20 kids with different women and hit up the all you can eat buffets 4 times a day.

Posted by: aztecwolf

jason williams has actually done a solid job for the playoff bound clipps this year, hubie brown has really made him a far better player

Posted by: aztecwolf

yeah grizz i mean

Posted by: x~factor

"Sky" Walker

1st round pick of the Knicks, 5th overall. Awesome in college, a bust in pro.

Bullshit. I live close to Chicago, we grew up playing ball trying to be Jordan. I actually have the video of that season, it's called "Unstoppabulls" I'm telling you, Shawn Kemp was good, Michael was great. That was the year the Bulls were 72-10 (All time record...). Kemp was a great player who contributed to his team, Michael was a leader and a larger than life force in those games. Whenever they needed a last second shot, or point, or a spark or anything, they called on Jordan. He was league MVP that year and averaged over 30 a game. The man was a machine.

Lol. I was once shoved by Ralph Sampson. i think it was '93, maybe '94. I was 5 or 6 years old I think, and he was playing for the C.B.A. team in my city, the Rockford Lightning. I went down with my dad to the sideline to get an autograph(not a good idea....) I must've only gotten all the way down there because I was a little kid, but anyways I tapped the dude on the shoulder and asked for an autograph, and he didn't even really look at me, just muttered something and shoved me away with his hand, almost knocked me down cause I was so small. Not really relevant but I figured I'd mention that I was shoved by a former NBA star.

Posted by: I Are Baboon

Damn, I didn't know Yinka Dare died. Bummer. I remember he was drafted so high and was called a "project player" with all sorts of potential. It just never came together for him. Anyway, good thread. I'm not a huge NBA hoops fan. I just like following former UConn players...

Posted by: IainDaniel

Big Country with the Vancouver Grizzilies wasn't he like a top 5 pick. That was the downfall of that franchise.

Posted by: DFINEST

Shawn Bradley was THE BIGGEST BUST.....

How a guy can get drafted so HIGH after
not playing any organized ball for a year is beyond me

Posted by: camarosuper6

Robinson didnt play organized ball for 2 years.

Posted by: DFINEST

True, but I've never seen ANYTHING
that Bradley has done in college....
That was not the case with Robinson and
the Naval Academy does not get much TV

Posted by: Ralph Wiggum

Yep, Sam Bowie....

Posted by: greekblondechic

By biggest busts.. I thought you were referring to boobs

hey yo, I am just talkin about the finals series specifically, and thats it. I am not stupid enough to say anyone is better than MJ, nor is anyone out there a bigger fan of Jordan then me. I am just saying that Kemp was the best player in that series, he outplayed jordan IMO. No doubt jordan is like 5 times the player Kemp ever was. I followed the Bulls very closely every year, especially that year. I love the Bulls no doubt, he is a machine.

For teams, I would pick the 2003-2004 Toronto Raptors. Kevin O'neill as head coach (I assume y'all heard what happened to him recently), VINCE CARTER, JALEN ROSE, Donyell, Alvin Williams, (used to be) Antonia Davis...It seemed like we were really going somewhere with the team. Then...no.

Posted by: gr81

give them time to gel Jaim, they only got Rose halfway through the season or someshit like that. Chemistry is not always just there. I am alos a big Raptors fan so I feel ya, but maybe they will do something next year to speak of. I wouldn't go so far as to say they are one of the biggest busts ever by any means. Its not like they were championship caliber and fell off. now if you want a biggest bust for a team, how about the 1993 Seattle Supersonics!!! They had a league best 63-19 record and were lookin to go all the way, certainly they were the best team in the league that year and seeded number one. They went up 2 games to 0 on the eight seeded Nuggets and lost 3 games in a row to become the first or second team in history at the time to lose to an 8th seed. (I think that NY and Miami was the other). Now THAT is a bust. I actually cried when that happen, the whole city was in shock as Mutombo laid sprawled out on our home court crying. What a horrible year for the Sonics

Posted by: jaim91

The knicks...no matter who they have on the team, who's coaching, who's "general managing", who's president, they can't pull their shi*t together...Maybe Isiah will change things...

Posted by: IainDaniel

Isiah is a bum, and shouldn't be running his own life let alone a NBA franchise. Sorry, I just think he is an idiot.

As for the Raptors. They don't have a chance in hell, unless they do some major reshuffling. From the top all the way down. Grunwald had some unlucky breaks, thats the way the cookie crumbles, so I see them getting rid of him. O'Neill I really liked, he wouldn't take any shit, maybe opened his mouth a little too much.

The problem starts with the top of the franchise where you have people running the franchise that know jack shit about basketball. Then there is Vince, who know doubt has unbelievable talanet, but the work ethic? I beleive Antonio Davis' comments a few weeks ago bashing VC. VC has lost respect of his team mates from his whinning and constant injuries, that he can't find a way to play through. Especially when you have a player like Alvin Williams, who isn't all that, with two bummed knees, but is dying to try and get in the line up and make a difference.

I wouldn't be suprised if VC is gone, and the Raptors Take a new direction. Steve Nash is a free agent, and he would love to play back in Canada. Or maybe make a splurge for Kobe. Guess will have to wait to see who is hired for GM?

oliver miller definately has to take the cake(and eat it too) for that honour

Posted by: jaim91

Aztec - I would give that honour to Shawn Kemp in his latter days.

Aian - I don't know if VC will leave Toronto. Every other team has "a" star. He is ours, and he knows it. We cannot afford to splurge for Kobe, and while Steve Nash may be patriotic and all that jazz...WE'RE A LOST CAUSE. Why move from hot, sunny, Dallas with an amazing roster and a hilarious knowledgable GM, to Toronto.

Posted by: aztecwolf

yeah kemp would give him a run for his money but i still got it on ollie, tractor traylor might be pretty good too, geez i wish i was tall and fat and get paid millions to suck at basketball

Posted by: IainDaniel

VC is our star, and that is the unfortunate thing. After the last 3 seasons of seeing his charades, I have all but given up on him as the leader of this team, too inconsistent. I hope he can prove me wrong.

Posted by: jaim91

I don't think he'll finish out his contract. His heart just isn't in Toronto anymore. sure he's a star, and he knows it (and isn't afraid to let other know it...) but he wants to be on a winning team and where he won't take a back seat to anybody. Those are two criteria that he will look for when choosing a new team.

Remember when Chris Childs was put on the injured/disabled list beause he was obese? lol
