Fresh egg whites or powder, which is preferred? If powder which brand?

Thanx in advance

Posted by: PreMier

Fresh. Or from www.lanaseggwhites.com

Posted by: usntoothfairy

Thanx for the tidbit I was hoping for a powder that I could mix with my shakes. Again thanx

Posted by: PreMier

I personally have never seen an egg powder, unless its egg albumin whey?
Why not just use a few whites and toss it all in a blender? Raw eggs arent bad for ya.

Posted by: usntoothfairy

PreMier, forgive me if you already know, but are you familiar with ON's 100% Eggwhite protein powder? Or is that what you meant by egg albumin whey?

Also, they make 100% pasturized liquid eggwhites, just in case you dont know, and you can find them in the dairy section of most supermarkets. I get mine at wal-mart and they come in a little milk carton looking bottle. They're much safer to use than raw eggwhites and they're tasteless. You can get 5 grams of protein per 3 tbsp serving. Egg Beaters makes some, but I buy the ones by Pelpati Foods, they costs less and are identical to name brand.

Serving size 3 tbsp
servings per container about 10

Per serving
-Calories 25
-Calories from fat 0
-Total fat 0g
-Saturated fat 0g
-Cholesterol 0mg
-Sodium 75mg
-Total carbs 0g
-Sugars 0g
-Protein 5g

Yes, thats what I meant by the albumin whey. However Fuck ON!

And whats wrong with raw whites? I have never known one (1) person to get salmonella from egg whites.

Woah you're right... "Biotin deficiency is rare in the absence of total intravenous feedings without added biotin or the chronic ingestion of raw egg white."
http://www.nutrition.org/nutinfo/content/biot.shtml

I wonder how accurate this is...if its true maybe I better invest in some cassein shake.

or then again, if you do drink alot of egg whites, couldnt you just supp with vitamin-B??

Im not qualified to get into whats wrong with raw eggwhites because I honestly dont know anything more than Ive been told. But you know, I also have never personaly seen anyone get sick from them either, so.... . I was basicaly just pointing out that they're pasturized, which probably just decreases the chances of anything negative, but who knows.

regardless, the enzyme advidin in the egg must be deactivated by heat before all of the protein(s) are made bioavailable...

So you think that 2-3 whites a day is bad for you?

Is albumin powder "deactivated" by heat?

I'm not quite sure about the manufacturing process of egg proteins. but I know that the temperature required to deactivate avidin is not that high or in long duration. I'm sure egg protein powders are a very bioavailable source or protein or we (the BB community) would have known about it long ago..

Right now I am using The Vitamin Shoppe's brand of egg protein powder. The "heavenly chocolate" flavor and the taste is not really heavenly but its not sickening either. But to be honest, I make it with a 50/50 ratio of filtered water and Lactaid milk, so that might have something to do with it. Also, I have probably been spoiled by Muscle Milk, but thats another story. I will try some with just pure Lactaid tomorrow and just water in the morning and tell you if its any better.

Optimum Nutrition makes an eggwhite protein powder also. Its a bit more expensive, but Im told the taste is pretty good. They just didnt have it at the Vitamin Shoppe or I would have probably bought that one. I know of a couple of websites you can get it from at a decent price, PM me for those links if you want. The VS price is 22.37 per 2lb bottle. Here's the breakdown on both for ya:

Vitamin Shoppe house brand
Serving Size 3/4 SCOOP
-Calories 106
-Calories From Fat 0 Gm
-Total Fat 0 Gm
-Saturated Fat 0 Gm
-Cholesterol 0 Mg N/A*
-Sodium (85% Sodium-Free Dv) 260 Mg
-Total Carbohydrate 2 Gm
-Dietary Fiber 0 Gm
-Sugars 1 Gm
-Protein 22 Gm

Optimum Nutrition
Serving Size (scoop) 1
-Calories 100
-Fat Calories 0
-Sodium (mg) 340
-Potassium (mg) 390
-Total Carbs (g) 4
-Dietary Fiber (g) 1
-Sugars (g) 0
-Proteins (g) 22
-Calcium mg 20

Update for greekblondechic and anyone else interested in the taste of eggwhite protein powder:

I made a shake with the VS brand egg protein using only water and it still tasted nasty. I went and exchanged the chocolate for vanilla and I will tell you what that tastes like tonite.

Update for greekblondechic and anyone else interested in the taste of eggwhite protein powder:

Tried the vanilla flavor late last night with fat free Lactaid. It tastes excellent. It will probably taste just as good with water since lactaid hardly has any flavor whatsoever.
