Suggestions for Prince As He Customizes Forums

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I was thinking since Prince is pretty much in the process of customizing the forums, does anyone have any suggestions for features or the appearance of the forums?

Any color schemes in mind guys? I always liked a little darker. Not as dark as the Avant Labs forums, but just shades of dark grey maybe?

Or even silver like the letters of "Iron" in the Iron Magazine in the logo at the top of the page?

I noticed that our sigs can only have a certain amount of characters, not as many as before, is it going to stay that way permamently?

Posted by: Vieope

It is still too blue.
The green light to indicate that someone is online is no good. I liked the "Online!"

you can have as many characters as you want in your sig, but only 125 pixels will display, then the scrollbar comes up.

this was the best way I could come up with to control signature length and size without putting any limitation on them. I considered not allowing images in sigs anymore, but did this instead.

thats cool Prince. Its a nice compromise fa sho

Posted by: Muscle_Girl

Question, in my mind, it was kinda reasonable, but just gonna ask anyway. Why did ya change it from 200 to 100 PM's allowed?

Posted by: M.J.H.

I like the look of the blue, even though it looks a lot like a few other forums.

We just need to get rid of that italicized username stuff.

---Something else that drives me nuts! I think we should be able to edit any of our posts, even ones that were posted forever ago. A lot of times I want to edit old journal entries etc.

Posted by: Mudge

That is why I only make journal entries once a day.

Posted by: M.J.H.

I only make them once a day as well. But I am talking in terms of editing old journal entries from a while back, etc.

I personally do not think there should be a limit on how far back you can edit your journal entries.

here is why this is not good...

someone starts a thread and it goes on for 2-3 days, then for whatever reason, maybe the person get s ripped a new one about what they posted (like some bogus crap) so they go back and change their original posts. See what I mean?

And that is just one example of why it's not a good idea to allow indefinite post editing.

Posted by: M.J.H.

Good point, definitely understandable.

Posted by: PreMier

What about having different color scheme options?

Go to explorerforum.com and at the VERY bottom of the page on the left hand side, you can choose between 5-6 different schemes.

Posted by: X Ring

no kidding I never saw that I should check it out b/c I dont like the colors over there

Posted by: M.J.H.

Yeah I think that would be a GREAT idea!

Posted by: PreMier

Shoot... Thing is explorerforum uses vB GOLD.

Posted by: Muscle_Girl

When in the Members pics, there isn't a link at the top for IM boards, is it possible to make it linked pls ? thanks Prince

Posted by: Var

The Im logo at the top is a link to the forum main page

Posted by: Muscle_Girl

Yes, but doesnt that take ya to the IM main page rather than the forum?

Sec, wiltry lol

Posted by: Muscle_Girl

Lol, nevermind, thanks Var!

Posted by: Var

Anytime!

Posted by: PreMier

Oh, one more thing, I already asked this, but got no answer? Anyway, is it possible to add an "Unsubscribe" button into the quick reply? So when I am welcoming new members, that I can unsubscribe from their thread?

Posted by: Var

Maybe if u werent such a post whore you wouldnt have this problem.

Posted by: PreMier

Your just jealous

Posted by: Var

Yes...thats true.

Posted by: Vieope

you can disable it in your usercp.

Posted by: Muscle_Girl

Prince, I just went to look at replies to my Multi Vitamin question in the Diet and Nutrition forum... but the thread disappeared Did you delete it for some reason?

Posted by: IainDaniel

There is alot of cool features starting to pop up with this upgrade, Like the Keyword links. You better be getting some serious coin from the board sponsors for that

Good job Prince

Any word on your venture you will be starting with this site?

Where?

Posted by: CourtQueen

I can't find that option either. It is a pain in the arse having that message box come up after you hit send on a pm.......
Nothing like hitting enter twice. (I know, such a freakin critical user, but I have to be, normally I'm dealing with the asshole users that kind find the ..... oh well, nevermind)

Posted by: HoldDaMayo

what i hate is that black bar on the left side of teh screen... just a total waste of space...

Posted by: Prince

what black bar? what web browser are you using?

IE 6 is highly recommended for this board to display and function properly.

Posted by: Prince

oh, I agree on the PM receipt thing, I thought this could be disabled on a per user basis, but it's not looking like it...I will go ask over at vBulletin. I could disable it globally, but that is not a feasible option either.

Posted by: nikegurl

hey Robert - you're a Prince among men for doing all of this.

Posted by: Prince

okay, Read Receipt pop-up box removed, there is no a check box option, it's checked by default. (under Additional Options when you send a PM)

Posted by: Vieope

Thanks Prince.

Posted by: Prince

no problem.

Posted by: Muscle_Girl

Just a minor question, no rush.. was just wondering if you got rid of that open chat thingy or not, if not, where did ya put it?

Posted by: Prince

it would have to be re-integrated with this version, not sure if there is an integration available yet or not...also I did not think anyone really used the live chat, do they? If so, I can look into setting it back up.

Posted by: PreMier

I have used it before, but not too often. Need to start an "Official: COME TO CHAT" thread.

Posted by: Muscle_Girl

Lol, well everytime I go in there it's empty
Does it cost ya more to have it available?

Posted by: Var

I would use it, but could never get it to work for some reason.

Posted by: PreMier

Prince-
Is there a way to make it so we can "subscribe" to a thread without posting in it?

at the top of the thread click on Thread Tools.

Posted by: PreMier

Wow, thanks. I guess I need to explore the options more.

How do you like my new sig?

IM kicks ass!

Posted by: Prince

your sig is great.

Posted by: M.J.H.

What's with the HUGE amount of space between the end of posts and the start of the user's signature?

Posted by: Prince

me messing around with templates.

Posted by: Vieope

I always wondered what LLC means.. what is it?

Posted by: Prince

LLC = Limited Liability Company

basically it separates the owner of a company (me from IM) for tax purposes, also if someone sued IronMagazine.com they could not come after my personal assets.

Posted by: Vieope

Posted by: Randy

LLC...Yes, smart move there.

Now as for the chat feature IMO.. Why add it when you can just use Yahoo .
As you say, whenever I went in there when you were running the last version It was always empty.

Posted by: Vieope

If you post this smile ( ) alone, the message by default converts it to (:d), always. Then you have to edit it and it will be fine.
Anyone noticed it? Is there a way to fix it?

Posted by: PreMier

Also if you try and post LOL in all caps alone, ti de-capitalizes it like so: Lol

Posted by: Randy

Hmmmm seems like you found a small bug....
But I don't think it is significant enough to worry about it

Posted by: Mudge

Caps? I feel quite sure that is no bug, people get ticked over that for probably the last 15 friggin years if not more. I dont know if anyone on the ARPANET was so lazy to type in all caps though. I've been on the net (Compuserve, and www.Webcrawler.com ) since 90 or 91.

no bug, I have a setting turned on that does this.

I am not talking about Premiers issue...

The first issue sounds like a bug.
If you type the code to represent the large grin smiley in a message window with no other text in the window using upper case like you are supposed to, it converts the code to lower case and no symbol appears.

Now after you save changes and submit your message, you notice just the code appears. Then if you edit the message once again, remove the code and type it again the same exact way it appears correctly.
