Complex carbs are basically carbs that fuel the body steadily for a longer period of time than simple carbohydrates. One primary advantage is that complex carbs are more likely to get used up in the amount of time they are in your system in relation to simple carbs. Therefore, they are less likely to be stored as fat.

how about fruits .. do wat kinda carbs do they contain?

To me, good carbs are beer, pizza, tacos, and ice cream. I guess you were prolly looking for something else, though.

correct, but the main reason that a simple carb (sugar) will cause fat storage is because they cause the release of insulin.

Fruit is fructose. Fructose refills liver glycogen. It doesn't take much fruit to fill liver glycogen and should be used sparingly while cutting.

I'm pretty new at this but i've been told to stay the hell away from fruit. Supposed to be high in sugar.

I like apples, grapefruits and strawberries as my fruit choices.

I love bananas but rarely ever eat them

What is the latest you should eat carbs before bed when trying to cut?

Posted by: Prince

depends on the fruit, I eat apples.

True. This can be beneficial at certain times though. After a workout is probably the best time to spike your insulin as studies and many people have proven. As well, I would think that a little bit of an insulin spike upon waking up in the morning is not too terrible because blood sugar levels tend to be lower in the morning.

yup, I agree, that is called nutrient timing.

Someone explained to me why simple carbs mixed with fiber still is a bad thing, although it digest rather slower. Can someone explain to me again? Thanks

Quick additional question, is there a difference between Yams and Sweet Potatoes in terms of being good carbs?

Posted by: aztecwolf

bananas(after every workout, i can't get enough of em), apples/pears (preworkout), blueberries (oatmeal), and strawberries (anytime, anywhere) are the fruits for me

Forget about simple and complex carbs, that s--t is old and wrong. It's high glycemic and low glycemic carbs.. What you want are low glycemic carbs. the reason being is high glycemic carbs are converted to sugar in the body and causes your insulin level to rise, causing these carbs (sugar) to be stored as fat. Pick up a copy of The Zone by Dr. Barry Sears he explains it much better then me. This info can change your life. Also It sounds like you need to know the proper way to do your cardio. I wish I had the time to get into that.

Probably not, unless you are talking real yams.

Most of what is labelled "yam" at your local purveyor of produce is merely a different subspecies of sweet potato -- rather like the difference between, say, a red-skin potato and a Yukon Gold, which is to say "not much."

The GI lists at mendosa.com have little helpful to say, I see. Real yams, American "yams", and sweet potatoes are all over the map, with GIs from 25 to over 70. I'd suspect the American "yams" or sweet potatoes might have more and better phytochemicals, though, given their attractive orange colour. Tropical yams have white flesh.

Yams are orange. Sweet potatoes arent. Thats how it is where I shop.

sweet potatoes taste better to me than do yams

it's basically the same thing just the gi scale is a little more scientific in nature, some people get scared of by science mumbojumbo
simple carbs are generally high gi and complex carbs(lots of fiber) are complex carbs

it all depends on how many carbs you are eating and when you workout, if you workout out at night then you want those postworkout carbs at night

3 types of sugars. Green apples are ok now and then, and they taste good (to me).

Search Google for a Glycemic Index and look for a mid to low number, they will be 0-100. High GI means fast insulin release.

You could look into glucose disposal agents, which were popular once (vanadyl sulfate was one I tried long ago). I've never looked into these carb blocker product claims but most likely that is what they are.
