I am one weak mofo

OK, I need a little help from everyone. I haven't gone to the gym in pretty much 1 year. I stopped going to the gym when i moved up to school (engineering major, not much free time). So I finally decided to go back into the gym hardcore, but my losses were pretty extreme. When i stopped going my 1RM on the bench was 335, I could do inclines with 95lb barbells and all that cool stuff. When I went back today i decided to go light, but to my surprise, light is now heavy. I put up 135 for 12, 10 and then 155 for 5, all very close to failure.

So I guess what my question is, is how long should I expect to be this weak, and how should I go about getting back to where I was? I dont have an oven, because I'm living on a navy base, so it's tough to eat properly, and I'm just not used to working out anymore. I guess I'll have to take it easy for the first few weeks and look like a little girl, but that's OK because it's all for the long term. Any suggestions? I'm very disappointed that I lost this much over the course of only 1 year. Anybody have similar experiences/success stories?

Thanks
Steve

Muscle memory is a wonderful thing.

If you start training regularly again, your gains should come back fairly quickly. As for the diet... not sure what you can do without an oven. Lots of tuna and whey i guess?

Posted by: 1WeakMofo

Well I'm hoping to get back most of my gains over the next 3-4 months. Does that sound reasonable or overly optimistic? Yeah I guess all I can do for diet is eat tons of whey, tuna, and I can actually get a crapload of precooked chicken from someone. Any opinions? What rep range should I work in, how many sets, and I'm guessing work mostly the core exercises (bench squat dead) none of that silly shaping crap like x-overs. Is it normal to have lost this much strength? I think I also lost about 20 pounds of bodyweight. I never took any steroids but i did take creatine so I'm guessing a bit of that is lost water weight. What say you?

Hopefully some other people can chime in here... since im not the smartest when it comes to training advice.

But i dont see any reason why you should alter your routine from what got you to your "year ago" physique. If it worked then, it should work now, right?

For protein you can eat tuna, sardines, various deli meats, and whey. Also, you could drink raw egg whites, whole eggs, and milk.

For fat you can eat peanut butter, olive oil, fish oil, flax oil, and maybe some safflower mayo to mix with the tuna.

Carbs are more of a challenge. You could eat raw oats and maybe some pita bread...

Maybe I could make a turkey sardine whey egg milkshake?? But really, is it safe to drink raw eggs straight out of the shell? wont i get that salmonella? and aren't deli meats not so good for you? I never really cared much about my diet before, but I think it'll help me get back on the right track quicker. I used to eat whatever my stomach told me to, and that worked great. lots of bagels and yogurt and milk back then. anyways, this time I want to go in 100% and do it right. I never really used to have a set workout either. I just kinda went in and did what I felt like ,maybe like 225X10 275X5 then max out like every week. I guess you could say that's a stupid workout, but I was a teenager and it was working. Anyways, should I maybe to the gopro workout or just do whatever i feel like doing again? Yeah, I don't understand my body either, I just kinda listen to what it tells me to do.

I know these egg whites: www.eggology.com are tested for salmonella, so you can eat them raw... and they stay good in the refrigerator for 4 months. Apparently they dont taste so good, though.

Can you get a george foreman grill or something? Nice and small, tucks away ... easy to clean ...

You'll be surprised how fast it all comes back if you stay on your program.

Posted by: 1WeakMofo

well i'm only here for another 4 weeks. I have a foreman grill back at my apartment in connecticut, but I'm stuck out here in california until july 31st. I guess i can survive on chicken and tuna for another 4 weeks and then get on the proper diet (even though proper diets suck cuz i'm a poor college student and proper diets are expensive oh well it's worth it ) george foreman should be given the nobel peace prize or something, it's saved me many minutes.

And when you say "no time at all" do you mean like 3 months or like 2 days or like 1 year? I've got an itch that needs scratching man, I need to get back to peak physical condition, you understand.

Wow, 335 to around 180 or so? That is crazy. Is that normal?

Posted by: 1WeakMofo

Well it has been a year, and I have lost 20 lbs of body weight. Maybe I'm just one of those weird freaks who gains fast and loses fast. I just hope I can get back up to around 300 in the next few months. I'd hate to think I did all that work before for nothing. God bless muscle memory??

Muscle memory IS a wonderful thing. I had a similar experience when I stopped working out for about two years. When I quit, I was benching around 250. When I returned I had trouble doing 5 reps with 135! In about 6 months, I surpassed the 250.

If you were benching 335 before, obviously you were doing something right. I would just go back to your old routines, eat well and work hard. You'll get it back in no time. The fun part is seeing the rapid improvement week to week.

can't wait to get back up there, it's been way too long

Heres my experience. Might give you some clue. I had to give up the gym for 4 months. After i went back, it took me about 6 weeks to get back to the level where i left off. But i guess this also depends from person to person.
