Chin up, becasue longer range of motion and involves the lats slightly more. There is a really good write up in July Muscle & Fitness mag.

definetly chins...

If you're talking about true chin-ups (palms facing body), you're involving the biceps more so than the lats. Pull ups (palms away from body) are definitely better for the lats than Lat Pulldowns.

the latissimus dorsi is the primary mover on both the pull-up and chin the bicep are used as synergists in both exercises...

I'm with LAM. If you focus on pulling with your elbows and not squeezing the hell out of the bar, you will not recruit the biceps nearly as much as if you squeeze the bar and pull from the wrist.

According to the Dr who gave the seminar I attended last week for ISSA, Latissimus Dorsi is not the primary muscle in chin ups do to it being twisted by that grip, causing the biceps to step in due to better leverage.

Well just so you know the orignal poster said lat pullDOWN, so in his case the chins(palms facing out) are better.
Ive heard that chins(palms out) with wide grip is the best, then chins(palm in) with a narrow grip is a close second. I read that in a magazine, that some universite tested it.
