Do these affect your bench press? I'm cutting, but a month ago I was able to bench 235 on a normal olympic bench. Today, I was barely able to do 185lb on an ergonomic bench

What is an ergonomic bench?

I've never seen an ergo bench. Got a link?

The bench is broken up into something like that, except without all the pulleys and machines surrounding it.

Is it a flat bench or upright like that one?

the bench is broken up like that? But you are doing a free weight lift correct? You are not using the machine......why would you want to use a bench like that? It looks uncomfortable as hell.

Posted by: Alaric

Yeah, the bench is broken up like that, and I am using pure free weights, not a machine. Honestly, I would rathre have a regular bench, but this gym does not offer one. I just need a place to workout for 2 months, before I can get into a REAL gym.

Also...it is uncomfrotable, just cause my ass was inbetween 2 pads, I couldn't keep it on the bench, or else it'd feel...well gay.....

Var - it is a flat bench. It has a rack and all for the weights. Its set up like an olympic bench, with the exception of the pad being broken up like that.

I cant think of how it would make your lifts go down, aside from just being uncomfortable. That would probably effect how much weight I could lift. I'd just use the Olympic bench. Tried and true!

Well, in that case, yes. The equiptment you are using, in this situation the bench, can impact your strength. We are strongest in the most comfortable invoroment to us. Once we are taken out of the box and asked to perform in a different environment things likestrength can be affected, until that environment becomes "familiar". This is called contextual interference.

Yeah, maybe so. I will see on my friends olympic bench one of these days.

P-funk, I can't remember if it was you or Mudge, but one of you guys gave a good description of "pulling the bar apart". I believe one of you said that you push your left hand out to the left, and your right hand out to the right when trying to "break the bar in half" during a bench. Did i get that statement right?

Posted by: P-funk

I believe it was saturday fever who had the post on pulling the bar apart. I said that I like to think of it as squezzin my pinkies together, causing my to push with the outer portion of my hands and engage my triceps more. Either way you think about it it will work though.

Whoa thanks for the explanation P-Funk. Wow this is gonna suck, cause I'll only be working out at this gym for 2 months, then I move onto a real gym, and by then I'll hvae to get used to the regular olympic benches....wow

No, you should be fine. Your body adapts quickly, especially to things that are or once were familiar to it.

Pull it apart!

Your mind is just unhappy at being uncomfortable. It will adjust.
