What cardio and best time to do it

I've been doing HIIT cardio for 15 minutes (6mph for 30 seconds, then 8 mph for the next 30 secs.) then i jog for 4.5 mph for 5 minutes to cool down every day in the morning after breakfast, then at around 8 pm i do weight training (or pilates depends on what day it is) so my question is would i still get the same results if instead of jogging i skipped? also whens the best time to do cardio? i read in a magzine that after you do weight ttraing your body bulids this acid so if you do your cardio after weight traing you have to burn through that acid before fat, but i also heard alot of people do thier cardio after weight lifting..
also one more question..the reason i split my workouts is because i heard that doing cardio at one period of the day then doing meight training another period of the day will burn more calories cause your increasing your metabolism different periods of the days...is this true? or is it better to do it all at once?

Twice daily training sessions are ideal for elevating metabolism and increasing nutrient partitioning (i.e., your body deciding whether the food youre eating gets stored as fat or used as fuel by your muscles).

Not too sure on the skipping... although i dont see why not. Of course, that might be kind of difficult on a treadmill.

lol no i don't mean skipping on a treadmill, i don't even think thats posable, anways i just meant skipping normally.....you should be doing cardio 2x a day? isn't that overkill cause too much cardio will burn muscle won't it?, besides i usually jog for 5 minutes after each meal and snack anwways
also would it be better to do like a steady moderate jog for 30 minutes, or that HIIT i said for the 15 minutes then cool down for 5 minutes..I'm completely lost as to what cardio is best, i hear one thing that contradicts the other all the time

Oh ya and just to let you guys know, my goal is to try and get rid of this little bit of fat on my stomach and define it more, not sure if you need to know this or not

sorry but picturing grown men skipping for exercise seems kinda uh, funny.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

Anyway, I do my cardio way after I do my weight training. My logic is that when I'm done lifting weights, my body needs time to recuperate at least a little before I exert it again. Hence, I wait at least an hour or two after lifting to do any cardio.

Well i'm not a grown man, i'm a teenager :P, and the reason i wanna know if skipping would be just as good is because my parents keep bitchin at me cause I have the TV on too high in the morning and they can't sleep (i like watching tv while on the treadmill) so i figure if i'm skipping i can be right beside the tv so i don't have to have it as loud. Not to mention my feet are starting to get blisters from the treadmill

You mean grown men like Muhammed Ali... Mike Tyson... Lennox Lewis... Franco Columbu...

The acid you`re reffering to is lactic acid (Lactate), it`s the end product of anaerobic metabolism in muscle cells. The lactate does not get used for energy metabolism but instead needs to be cleared out of the cells because an acces of lactate in muscle cells inhibits muscle contraction.

So If you would do cardio immediatley after a heavy workout there`s a chance that you`ve build up an acces of lactate in your muscle cells that needs to be cleared out before you can do your HIT cardio. Maybe it would be better to give your body a little bit rest before doing your cardio. But cardio after your weighttraining is better cause after a weighttraing session the glycogen reserves in your muscle cells are low which the muscle cells react by upping the fat metabolism for their energy requirement instead of using the glycogen.

Yeah, it was concerning lactic acid buildup during exercise (whether to do cardio before/after resistance training). I didn't go into depth.

Basically, you'll be burning off lactic acid instead of fat (i.e., doing cardio after resistance training). To what degree, who knows.

That's not true. You can't burn lactic acid. Lactic acid is the END product (waste) produced by anaerobic respiration and has no caloric value at all. Think about it there's no way you can increase available calories by working out.
Lactic acid will not inhibit the burning of calories unless the workout is so intense that the pain (the burn) from the lactic acid causes you stop.

Trying to burn lactic acid for energy would be exactly like trying to burn wood after it has already been burned.

Ok thanks everyone, I went out and bought a skipping rope tody and tried it out, by the end i was sweating more than when i'm jogging so i figure skippings just as good if not better

if you are going to skip I would do it just like HIIT. skip for 30 seconds than walk in place for 30 sec and repeat until you reach your goal time.

Posted by: Tom_B

ok thanks i'll give it a try

I also went out and got one of those ab rollers..god they hurt the wrists, are they suppos to hurt your wrists or am i just doing it wrong?..

Posted by: Akateros

You are probably doing it wrong. Don't allow your wrists to flex and your hands to bend backwards. I've not used ab rollers, but when I do rollouts with a bar, I keep my hands flat, in the same plane as my arms, and my arms perpendicular to my shoulders for the whole move (rather than letting them slide out beyond my head). It's your abs that should be doing all the work, not shoulders -- or wrists.

ok i'll try that cause i could only do 125 before my wrists just gave out on me
