Chains

I was curious if anybody here has experience with benching (or squatting for that matter) with chains. MnF had an article on this, and Kobe Bryant was shown using them in a Sprite commercial.

For those who don't know what they are, you attach chains to the ends of the Olympic bar, so as you bench the weight up the chain is lifted off the ground. The higher you lift the bar, the heavier the weight gets. I think this is supposed to encourage strength throughout the whole lift, and to help the lower push catch up to the higher push which is usually the easier part(?). Not too sure, but I am really interested in it.

If anybody here has done it or encourages it, let me know your opinions and whether it worked or not. It seems to me that it would be a great change and would help make some big gains.
If you have done it, what type of chain (size and length)? and do you know of any places that I can check out on how to make a good set.

Thanks

Funny you post this...I just noticed chains at my new gym, and didn't know what the deal was...

I'll be back there Weds, I'll ask the owner...he used to compete, So I imagine he's tried everything in the book

From the looks of it, it's three rows of chain welded to an old collar. I'll try to grab a pic. (and find out what length/gauge chain)

Chains are great. I use chains regularly in my workouts.

Chains will add resistance as they rise from the floor and drop resistance as they drop to the floor. I generally use either 80lb or 120lb of chains depending if I'm squatting or benching.

I absolutely LOVE the chains, I have been training with them for a while now and its hard to not use them for a WO. In fact, I love them so much I get motivated just looking at them sitting there on my floor and its makes me wanna strap up on the spot. I highly reccommend getting them crackin dude

I think I am going to make some on my own at te hardware store.

What length, weight, size of the chain do you guys reccomend? I think I have heard 5/8 for the links, and some smaller links to connect it to the bench.

Mine came from elitefts as well, like gr81.
