How effective can your muscle gain be while on a caloric deficit? Assuming you keep protein high and PWO nutrition solid. Is it possible to put on much?

I think it's a contradiction of terms. But...Good question, I was wondering myself. Somebody take a shot at this..

I think it's impossible to 'put on much', but it's certainly probable that LBM gain can occur while body fat is concurrently lost. I know I've stayed at the same weight a gained a little strength while losing BF before, so it is a possibility.

Peace.

Well said.
I feel is is possible depending on diet, however the amount would be minimal.

If you're running under maintenance I wouldn't count on adding muscle. If your body comes up short on calories it will have to rely on reserves. Muscle is a very efficient and plentiful source of energy and if running under maintenance there is a high risk of muscle catabolism IMO. Fat isn't a very 'lean burning' fuel, particularly during intense exercise.

You could well prove me wrong of course.

depends on how developed your muscles already are and how easy it is for you to put on muscle.

hmm
i may do short bulk
and short cut... to never really build up fat.

I heard it's not good to do short bulks and short cuts. It's better to stick to a long term plan. Probably so you will see better results. Anybody else have any other ideas?

someone correct me if I'm wrong...but from what I know, if you were to do a bulk with clean food and cardio, you can get some mighty gains while still staying quite lean

most people on a bulk just eat shit for the calories and never do any cardio thinking it's going to take away their muscle gains and then complain about that chubby look or whatever you want to call it

You can in fact get leaner while you get bigger (most commonly seen with those that aren't starting with much on them)...remember, the more muscle you put on, the more calories you need, the faster your metabolism, etc...add moderate cardio to this along with a CLEAN diet and I don't see why you would have much to worry about in the way of "getting fat"

specially if you're 20yrs old and under

Now to get that crazy ass pro bodybuilder definition you'd stil have to go on a cut...not saying you're going to get shredded even when you go on a bulk if you do it "the right way" or whatever...

hopefully that made some sense, and again, someone correct me wherever I may be off base

im simply looking to gain muscle and keep bf around the same...I dont care if my gains are slow...ive got nothing but time.

I am on a clean bulk.. started at 155lb (mar04) and presently 174lb.. and still bulking.. bf% is remains unchanged.. This means that i have gained some fat but not too much... in addition i have gained a lot more lbm. But this is on a bulk diet (started at 15x bodyweight, presently 18x), not a calorie deficit one.
