The Griffey Curse

(CLICK HERE here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I remember watching Ken Griffey Jr. when he was in the minors in Bellingham, WA. There was a buzz about his prospects back when he was 18, and for good reason. I loved watching him play in Seattle, and didn't blame him for heading off to another place. But ever since he left Seattle He's been dogged by the "Curse." Injury free until coming to Cinci, he was a serious contendor to surpassing Hank Aron's home run mark.

Now, with a torn hamstring and an injury plaqued last 4 years, I do believe there is a Griffey Curse.

Enjoy the article: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...griffey11.html

OMFG!! again.. man. he shoulda never left us up here in Seattle! seriously i feel horrible for Griff. I watched him as well since he came up and followed his career closely in Seattle. I have never enjoyed watching someone play the game like I did with Griffey. He was unbelievable in the field the way he would track down balls, and of course that swing is the sweetest in baseball. I will say that he is the BEST natural homerun hitter of the last few decades. He used to make Barry Bonds look like nothing. I wish him luck in recovering wich apparently will never happen. I miss watchin him play the way he did and consider myself lucky to have been able to see him in his prime.

Indeed, what a graceful swing.

I have my doubts as well. This is the second time he's torn that hamstring.

Man, what a pisser. Junior had a pretty good first half of this season too, and for a little while it looked like he might be "back." It's unreal the way this guy gets hit with injury after injury. Imagine what kind of numbers he'd put up if he stayed healthy his entire career.

I loved watching him against the Yankees. No one, and I mean NO ONE was a Yankee killer like Griff. Remember that postseason series against NY when Griffey was just unstoppable? That was awesome. In his prime, he was the most electifying player I've ever seen.

Posted by: Big Smoothy

Against the Yankees. 1995? It's really strange how his career changed. Like a before and after. I won't count him out. But....

Posted by: I Are Baboon

Yeah, it was 1995 vs NY. Five games, he hit 5 HR, batted .391, and had a slugging percentage over 1.000. But most importantly, Seattle won the series.

Brings back memories. And wow, you know your stats....

No, I looked it up. This thread had me wondering.

Posted by: MaxMirkin

Yeah, I remember that series......fuckin' Griffey......

But things sure did turn around next year. That Series in 96 is still one of my all-time favorites. Atlanta crushed us in first 2 games.....it looked like all was lost and Yanks were horribly outmatched........but we never gave up, and swept the fuckers in the next 4.

Oh, and we got Seattle back too. Remember a couple of years back when they tied the regular season record for most victories (116 ????), and looked like they would steam roll their way through the playoffs? Do you also remember which team crushed them in those playoffs........

Posted by: I Are Baboon

Remember that time the Yanks intentionally walked a guy to get to Griffey, then Griffey hit a Home Run, and as he was trotting towards home, he looked at the Yankee dugout, grabbed his crotch, and spat towards them? That ruled!

Posted by: MaxMirkin

Did I mention how happy I was when he left Seattle?

In retrospect, Seattle fans are probably happy too, given his injury problems.

It's amazing how Seattle has managed to stay competitive after all the talent they have lost: Griffey, A-Rod, Randy Johnson, etc.

Posted by: Dale Mabry

Poor Griffey, what a horrible curse. I wish I could be cursed with over 10 years of multi-million dollar contracts.

Posted by: Big Smoothy

^ That's a darn good point! I'll take that curse any day.

Posted by: Dale Mabry

And he's African American so he prolly has a big cock too...Bastard.

Posted by: gr81

^^ HA ha HA , way to throw that in there! lol. for the record, Griffey was kindof a bastard at times. he wasn't very fan friendly, but we still loved him cuz he was dope, not b/c of his big cock!

Posted by: bigss75

I remember during the whole home run race with mcgwire and sosa so guy asked griffey if he took any supplements and he said he tried creatine once and it gave him the worst shits of his life. I thought that to be amusing

Posted by: hithard51

yea griffey was sik i wish he never got injured he was the biggest star by far i think in baseball back with seatle

I'm a Seattle fan, and I guess sorta a Reds fan too. I hate to see Griffey hurtin. I saw a few cinci spring training games this year, and I saw him tweak his calf for his 1st injury this season. Didn't even look awkward, just ran off the field... i dont get it.

Oh dont even start.....

All I can do now is hope we hang on to ichiro!

The Mariners fuckin succ, I hate them so much. I ca't stand the moves the franchise has made. Its going to be hard to watch them ever again

Posted by: cmason2004

haha yeah I hear that gr81. it's so frusterating... I keep on watching though, barely ever anymore this season, beacuse I know it's not going anywhere, but I'll be back watching next year I'm sure.

How long till Melvin is collecting unemployment?

Posted by: gr81

its not Melvin, its the management.. Ever since our run in '95 someone crack pot decided that its important for baseball to appeal to women in Seattle. The franchise has made horrible decisions and I swear they are the most pussified team in teh league. I mean I used to be able to go to the Kingdome and yell out obsceneties at the players all day long. Now you get kicked out of the stadium in which you PAID a ticket to get in b/c you have a shirt tha says Yankess suck, b/c some bitch might get offended. They try and keep the same group of players around year after year so we can know them on a first name basis or some shit. I mean When was the last time they pursued a big name free agent. Last years offseason was THE year for big names, and teh biddest thing we heard out of Seattle is that we may possibly go after Miguel Tejada, maybe, ofcourse that never happened. They don't make the moves they need to win and its obvious. I miss teh old days of going to the Kingdome and watching our ball club hit homer after homer with that stacked lineup we had, and watchin the Big Unit striking out sides like its nuthin. That was fun baseball to watch. the team had personality, and more importantly talent in those days. Mariners ain't nuthing buut a joke now. Don't even get me started on the Sonics either! lol

I'm definitely not blaming him.... but everyone knows the coaches always end up going down

I agree they're not nearly aggressive enough in recruiting....

Is this true? You get kicked out for wearing a t-shirt that say so-and-so team sucks. What a pussy town. Seattle is a cry-baby, town. I'm from the area.

maybe so, but Seattle Basketball was a POWERHOUSE in the 90's dude, no team won more games besides Chi-town and maybe the Jazz, The have fell off bigtime man. After George Karl left town, the whole team was was left with no players pretty much. We even let Gary Payton leave instead of finishing his career in Seattle like he wanted to.

oh yeah man, its absolutely representative of the more encompassing mindset we have up here in the Pacific NW, its all pussified up here. Yeah last year at Safeco Field when Sea was playing the Yankees, fans all got together and wore shirts that said "Yankees Suck" just liek in Boston, and fans got kicked out of the game b/c it was innappropriate for eth children to see! btw theres a women behind that, shockin huh! Its the same biatch that has us going to domestic violence night at the ball park for christs sake! fucc the mariners maYn

Posted by: MaxMirkin

Good, I think anyone wearing a "yankees suck" shirt deserves to be kicked out.
(Oh and free admission to any stadium, for wearing a "BoSox = Gay" shirt! )

It looks like your the minority, because basically 75% of the US hates the Yankees and I am one of them.

The Seattle Sonics had a very good and an interesting team in the 1990s. From about 1993 to the late 1990s.

I liked George Karl and his style. His departure wasn't on the greatest terms and he really didn't like Wally Walker.

The Sonics have a lot of work to do.

I agree. As a native and long-term Kitsap County and Seattle guy, people are soooo pussified. (I used to be.) Take your time. We need a bridge bad, because of traffic. But let's debate it for 15 years. We need public transportation, but let's argue about it, and have referendums about it for 20+ years. Don't get excited, you might hurt someone's feelings. Don't be direct. Talk around things, you might offend someone.

There are positives to this, but also negatives.

This is insane! This ain't baseball. I used to go to Camden Yards, and go to games in Philly.

Safeco is a yuppified little play-pen for professionals in Seattle. Going to a Mariner game in Safeco field for them is a way to kill a couple hours before going out to an Italian restaurant, and have a micro-brew, as they don't know much about baseball.

The Kingdome days were great. "You dirty bum! Take a seat on the bench!"

What a frickin' joke it is, today.
