Is it possible to get a six pack and build muscle at the same time? I know abs only show when you lose body fat but you need extra calories to build muscle. So is it a case of one or the other?

Yes, it is possible to get a six pack and build muscle at the same time. Abs don't just show when you lose body fat; they show when you have a low bf %. Depending on your current condition, you have to choose if you want to bulk or cut. If you bulk, you might add some bf that will obscure your ab definition. If you cut right, you may not put on much, if any, muscle, but your abs will show better. If you are far below your genetic potential, the right diet and exercise routine will enable you to add muscle while slowly losing bf and gaining ab definition.

Well, the way to show abs is to lower bodyfat percentage. You can do this two ways: increasing muscle mass or decreasing bodyfat. If you do a very lean bulk, then you can be gaining enough muscle so that your bodyfat percentage goes down, although you are gaining fat. Here's the math to prove it:

Someone with 15% bodyfat at 200 pounds has 170 pounds of LBM and 30 pounds of fat on them. 30 / 200 = .15

Now, if that person were to gain 9 pounds of LBM and only 1 pound of fat. The equation is now 31 / 210, which equals .1476, or 14.76%.

This is damned near impossible to do without perfect diet, but it can be done.

Isn't your abs just like any other muscle group and requires some rest? Wouldn't ya get better results if you train your abs only 4-5 time a week?

Ok, so if I gain 9 pounds of LBM my bodyfat will go down .24%. At that rate I'll have to be 500 pounds to see my six pack. I mean..the numbers don't lie. It's impossible, they're contradicting goals.

I'll keep up the good work

my friend asked me the other day at which procentage of body fat you can start seeing your abs i told him that that is a good question....lol, i think it depends on person to person how can i answer his question, he is about 200 pounds and maybe im just guessing around 18% now, i usualy start seeing mine at 16% what shold i tell him

I think you are right, it's dependant on genetics/heredity

WOW! Thank you so much, Autarch and everyone else too! You guys are so sweet! You made my day!

I have found the weighted hovers are GREAT for abs! If you dont do them yet, give them a try!!! They hurt like a mutha, but they work.

If an ab excercise doesn't hurt like crazy you are doing it wrong

I can get a nice, pleasant burn everywhere in my body BUT my stomach. No matter what I do with my stomach the excercises just plain hurt (but they get results!)
