Coffee/Caffeine

I've tried to read up on this, but I keep finding conflicting "facts". Is drinking a cup or two (8 oz. each) of coffee per day going to have a negative effect on my goal of losing body fat and building muscle? I'm at 15%, trying to cut down my BF to about 12% (ideally 10%). I eat five, sometimes six times, a day, every 3 hours, protein/complex carb/veggie at most meals.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I have to ask, because I can't take this anymore. I drink my coffee (black with a few packets of splenda) every morning and then I feel guilty, like maybe I shouldn't be drinking coffee because it will hinder my fat loss progress.

What exactly "happens" in my body when I drink a cup of coffee? Some "experts" say that it causes a slowdown (?) in the body's use of fat stores for energy. Other "experts" claim that it speeds up your metabolism (which also, common sense dictates and I FEEL it, speeds up my heart rate for a short while). I'd never heard the first one (about slowing or inhibiting the use of fat stores), but I'd heard the second one before. Now I'm not sure if I'm doing more harm than good by enjoying the one "treat" I allow myself.

Can someone please set me straight on this once and for all? Will caffeine, specifically coffee, in small amounts have a good, bad or neutral effect on my goal? And psychologically, am I going about this the wrong way? Should I just not stress about one darn cup of coffee, if I'm doing so well with my diet and exercise in general?

I think you are reading a bit too much into this

Caffeine is used in just about all fat burners. It helps increase your metabolism. Most of us still drink coffee or diet soda's up until the last week before competition.

It will not hinder your results so enjoy your coffee

Totally agree!
I usually drink up to about 6 cups of coffee per day pre-contest.

Hahaha that's what I thought - that I was getting too carried away worrying about this stuff. I don't take any fat burners, so it didn't even cross my mind to make that rationalization.

Wow BritChick! 6 cups! You must be WIRED ALL DAY! I thought 2 cups was 1 cup too many!

I'm glad to hear some good news. Thanks!

Well when you add 3 x 25mg ephedra to the mix, yeah I am pretty stoked. lol

ha ha, I'd be squirrely after all that caffeine!

I've actually cut the coffee intake down now I'm off-season so that come pre-contest time it has more of a fat burning effect.

Same here. I'm naturally fidgety as it is, so coffee (or any kind of caffeine in large amounts) turns me into a total nut case

Anybody out there try caffiene tablets? If so, are they beneficial in terms of you giving you a boost to workout? I'm trying to stay away from thermogenics because of the ephedra, and I just wondered how effective caffeine would be.

Thanks

Sometimes I use caffeine tabs if I am in a rush and don't have time to grab a coffee... I would say they have the same effect as a cup of java would.

I am on a cut right now. So is it recommended i UP my coffee intake to burn fat??

Presently, on weekdays, i have about 200ml every morning and 300ml before a workout (2 days of the week). And on weekdays i have 300ml/day before my workout.

I wouldn't recommend to up your coffee intake especially if you are not use to it. If you are looking for metabolism increase I'd go with ephedrine and caffeine pills instead.

Jodi - what woudl you say is a 'safe' dosage of ephedrine? And what product would you recommend?

I prefer to do 12.5mg 4x per day of E and 100mg 4x per day of C. That is because I'm sensative to stimulants but it works well for me. Most people however do 25mg 3x per day E and 200mg 3x per of C. My heart starts racing too fast with that much though.

I just get Vasopro Ephedrine at www.bulknutrition.com

Most definately pre workout out. It will help give you and added boost

Didn't the FDA ban ephedra products? Are they still available?

I've never tried ephedrine in any form. Is it addictive at all? I'd hate to get started only to have the supply go away.

I'm pretty addicted to caffeine already. I roast my own coffee at home. I love the stuff. I limit the coffee to two or three cups a day, but there's no way I could function with less!

Ephedra was banned, not ephedrine.

What's the difference between ephedra and ephedrine?
