since it usually takes more insulin to regulate your blood sugars exogenously (using outside injected insulin) rather than the natural spikes by your pancreas, the answer is yes, most of the time. Afterall, no matter how accurately you count carbohydrate exchanges etc. the injection regimes just don't mimic the natural senors that detect how much insulin to release depending on not only the amount of carbs/sugars, but transit time in gut affected by fat content, your natural metabolic needs etc. However, we are fast approaching natural insulin patterns using combination of a long acting insulin like lantus and lispro (ultra short acting to mimic the natural insulin spike needed for just a short time after eating ) or insulin pumps that secrete a low level basal insulin with a lower level overall of insulin usage as a result rather than the old insulin analogues where you needed to inject huge doses to process and manage your food intake and had variable half lives.
