Anorexia

I'm no doctor, but I'm fairly certain that this girl at my gym has some serious problems.

When I get to the gym at 5 am and she is already exercising very vigorously. When I leave she's still at it. As far as I can tell she only does cardio, and at only one rate: As fast as she can go.

I can tell others notice by the looks on their faces, but what can strangers do? Can't the gym tell her something? I'm thinking of talking to a manager but I'm not sure...

I don't know her, and I don't like getting in other people's business. But everytime I see her she is thinner, and I would hate to see her drop dead on the treadmill next to me.

My advice is mention something to the manager - although they are probably aware of it already if they are a good gym. It's a tough conversation to have with a member (I've done it myself) but at least you can feel good about being concerned about a fellow human being and doing something about it. Most people wouldn't bother.

This isn't anorexia, BTW - it's compulsive exercising. They are both disorders and need the exact same treatment, usually by a qualified professional.

i had one of those at my old job (in a gym). To this day i kindda regret not talking to her, but i was too much of a pussy and i wouldn't even know what to say. I'd say tell a manager or a trainer on the floor, atleast so they'll keep their eyes peeled in case of an emergency.

anorexia and complusive exercises go hand in hand when I was going through my eating diorder this was my exercise routine - 2 hour walk followed by a 30 minute - 1hour full speed jog then I'd do 2 hours of Pilates and finish with 1500 sit - ups. Eventually my legs gave out on me and I could barley walk let alone run, so I had to change to 3.5 hour walks. You can tell though if she's anorexic by little signs, like the color of her face, is her face sunken in? The color under her eyes, her hair, the clothes she wears, the over all color of her body etc.
You should defintley mention something to someone, how old is she? If she's still in high school chances are her parents know somethings going on considering she's at the gym at 5am in the morning and so forth. But if she's out on her own then it's gonna be alot harder to do anything but either way you NEED to mention something to someone.
Also Veiope it dosen't matter if it was meant to be "dark humor" or not, you have no idea what hell it is to go through anorexia and it's not soemthing to joke around about "dark" or otherwise.

I do know, I had a mild eating disorder a few years ago and a friend almost died because of it. Like I said, it was meant to be a joke. Nobody would have an opinion like that.

She appears to be in her early to mid 20's. As to the clothes she wears, they are pretty scant—tiny shorts and a tiny halter top. I can see the bones in her back, it's gross, I think she's quite ill.

I'll have a talk with the girl at the front desk, she seems pretty friendly. Thanks for the advice, I've never even heard of compulsive exercising before today.

Tell her that your a good source of cardio, maybe she'll vigorously do you as cardio. Get something good out of this, but than again after shes done talk to her about it, tell her she needs to stop doing so much cardio on the machines, and cancel her membership to the gym. This way she'll have to use you as cardio and you can monitor her cardio, when you think shes done to much push her on the bed and than start your own cardio.
D There isn't much you personally can do, tell a manager, than if that doesn't work go to plan B above.

Shes not going to think what shes doing is wrong. She may have to have a close encounter at first before she realizes shes doing to much.

Telling a manager might not help also, he might not want to embarass her even if he sets her aside she'll feel self concious. He might not want to do that fraid for her cancelation of the membership. She may just go to a different gym. Try talking to her, and founding some type of relationship between you and her, and than as you get to know her ask her about it. "you know I've noticed that you do more cardio than anyone In the gym or for anyone in that manner. You probably eat whatever you want cause all this cardio probably burns everything away. Basically get her to open. She'll shut on you if you just ask her off the bat.
