Good baseball weekend coming up!

I love this part of the baseball season! Lots to watch for this weekend:
The NL Wild Card: Three teams in the hunt. Houston and San Fran are tied for the lead with the Cubs 1/2 game back. I give the edge to Houston since they play a weak Colorado team this weekend. The Giants face LA and the Cubs face Atlanta. How much would the Dodgers LOVE to knock the Giants out of contention?
The AL West: Anaheim is 1 game up on the A's, as the two teams play three games against each other this weekend. This is a PLAYOFF series.
Finally, Ichiro needs two hits to break Sisler's record.
Good stuff!

Oakland and Anaheim are dead even. They play a 2-out-of-3 to determine the division champion.

Postseason scenarios

National League See American League scenarios
Last series Fri, Sat, Sun (ET)
Cardinals (103-56) vs Brewers 8:10, 4:15, 2:15
Braves (94-65) at Cubs 3:20, 1:15, 2:20
Dodgers (92-67) vs Giants 10:10, 4:05, 4:05
Giants (89-70) at Dodgers 10:10, 4:05, 4:05
Astros (89-70) vs Rockies 8:05, 7:05, 2:05
Cubs (88-71) vs Braves 3:20, 1:15, 2:20
Padres (86-73) at Diamondbacks 10:05, 10:05, 4:35
Looking at Friday only: The Atlanta Braves clinch the No. 2 seed with a win OR a Dodgers loss. The Los Angeles Dodgers clinch a playoff berth with an Astros loss. The Dodgers clinch the NL West with a win.
NL WEST
Let's start with the NL West race. The Dodgers win the NL West if they win any of the three games against the San Francisco Giants.
If the Giants sweep, the Dodgers can only win the NL West if the Astros sweep the Colorado Rockies. Then the Dodgers, Giants and Houston Astros would all finish 92-70, and the Dodgers would visit the Giants on Monday for the NL West title. The loser of that game would face the Astros (Houston would visit San Francisco; the site of an Astros-Dodgers playoff has not been determined) on Tuesday to determine the wild card.
If the Giants sweep the Dodgers and the Astros do NOT sweep the Rockies, the Giants are the division champion (based on a 10-9 head-to-head advantage), and the Dodgers are the wild card. The Dodgers would visit the Cardinals to open the NLDS, and the Giants would visit the Braves.
The Dodgers will NOT get home-field advantage in the NLDS unless they sweep the Giants AND the Cubs sweep the Braves.
NL WILD CARD
This is the mess. The Dodgers, Giants, Astros, Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres all could finish as the wild card. In fact, the Dodgers, Giants and Astros could tie (although one would be the NL West champion); so could the Giants, Astros and Cubs. If the Padres are really lucky, they can tie the Giants and Astros (and possibly Cubs).
Let's get the "easy" stuff out of the way. If the wild card is from the NL West, it will visit the Cardinals. If the wild card is from the NL Central, it will visit the Braves (unless the Dodgers sweep the Giants and the Cubs sweep the Braves -- in which case it will visit the Dodgers and the Braves will visit the Cardinals.
TWO-TEAM TIE
If there is a two-team tie, the winner of a one-game playoff Monday wins the wild card. The Cubs would be at the Astros, and either the Astros or Cubs would be at the Giants.
THREE-TEAM TIE PROCEDURE
The three-team tie is more complicated. The Dodgers-Astros-Giants tie at 92-70 (Giants sweep Dodgers, Astros sweep Rockies) is discussed above. But what if it's the Astros, Giants and Cubs? Or the seemingly impossible Astros, Giants and Padres?
First of all, two playoff games are required to break the tie. The team with the best head-to-head record among the tied teams has the option: Watch the first game on Monday and play at the winner on Tuesday -OR- host a game Monday (against the team with the worst head-to-head record); the winner then hosts the remaining team Tuesday. The team with the next best head-to-head record gets the other option. The team with the worst head-to-head record plays Monday on the road and (if it wins) Tuesday at home. The winner of Tuesday's game is the wild card and opens on the regularly scheduled date (Wednesday).
ASTROS-CUBS-GIANTS TIE
So let's assume the Astros, Cubs and Giants finish tied.
The Giants won the season series 4-2 against each. The Cubs won the season series against the Astros 10-9. One of the following would occur:
1. The Giants take Monday off; Astros play at Cubs. Giants play at winner on Tuesday. Other NLDS cannot begin Tuesday because matchups won't be known until then.
2. The Giants choose to host the Astros on Monday. The Cubs visit the winner of that game on Tuesday. If Giants lose Monday, Cardinals still can host Braves or Dodgers (whichever is worse) on Tuesday.
ASTROS-CUBS-PADRES TIE
If the Rockies sweep the Astros, the Dodgers sweep the Giants, the Braves sweep the Cubs, and the Padres sweep the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Astros, Giants and Padres finish tied at 89-73.
The Padres won the season series vs. the Giants 12-7 and vs. the Astros 4-2. Their 16-9 record vs. the tied teams is better than the Giants' combined 11-14, which is better than the Astros' 4-8.
The Padres could either rest Monday and let the Astros visit the Giants. Then they would play at the winner on Tuesday (if the Giants win, then the Braves and Dodgers could still open their NLDS Tuesday), -OR- the Padres could opt to host the Astros on Monday, with the Giants visiting the winner on Tuesday (if the Padres won, then the Braves and Dodgers could still open their NLDS Tuesday).
ASTROS-CUBS-GIANTS-PADRES TIE
Finally, a four-way tie could happen at 89-73 (Rockies sweep Astros, Dodgers sweep Giants, Cubs win one of three against Braves, Padres sweep Diamondbacks). Then MLB conducts a draw to create a pair of Monday playoff games (Team B at Team A, Team D at Team C), and the two winners play Tuesday at the Team B-Team A winner.
TEAM-BY-TEAM SUMMARY
To sum up, team by team:
Dodgers. Magic number: 1. They clinch a playoff berth if the Astros lose. They clinch the NL West if they win. The ONLY way they miss the playoffs is if they are swept, the Astros sweep the Rockies, they lose at the Giants in a Monday playoff and they lose to the Astros in a Tuesday playoff. Cannot be eliminated before Tuesday.
Giants. They control their own destiny, so to speak. They win the NL West if they sweep the Dodgers – unless the Astros also sweep the Rockies, in which case they host the Dodgers for the NL West title on Monday. If they lose that, they would host the Astros on Tuesday for the wild card. Cannot be eliminated before Saturday.
The Giants also won the coin toss and would host the Astros or Cubs in any two-team playoff.
Astros. If they sweep the Rockies, they are the wild card UNLESS the Giants sweep the Dodgers. Then they would play Tuesday against the LOSER of the Dodgers-Giants NL West playoff to be held Monday. Cannot be eliminated before Saturday.
Cubs. They need to gain at least a game on both the Astros and Giants. They would be on the road for any two-team playoff (but likely at HOME if they and the Astros both are tied with the Giants). Cannot be eliminated before Saturday.
Padres. They just need a sweep of the Diamondbacks, a Dodgers sweep of the Giants, a Rockies sweep of the Astros and no more than one Cubs win against the Braves. And then they need to win a playoff. The good news: If the Cubs get swept by the Braves, the Padres would be the team that chooses the setup for the three-team playoff involving them, the Astros and Giants.
A loss, an Astros win OR a Giants win eliminates the Padres.

American League
Last series Fri, Sat, Sun (ET)
Yankees (100-59) at Blue Jays 7:05, 4:05, 1:05
A's (90-69) vs Angels 10:05, 4:05, 4:05
Angels (90-69) at A's 10:05, 4:05, 4:05
Twins (90-69) vs Indians 8:10, 12:10, 2:10
Red Sox (95-63) at Orioles 7:35, 1:15/7:05, 1:35
Looking at Friday only: If the Twins lose, it assures a Yankees-Twins ALDS and sends the Red Sox to the AL West winner.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The winner of the series between the Anaheim Angels and Oakland Athletics wins the AL West and hosts the Red Sox in the ALDS – unless the Twins sweep the Indians and the Angels-A's is NOT a sweep. In that case, the AL West winner visits the Yankees and the Twins host the Red Sox.
The Minnesota Twins are the AL Central champion. They visit the Yankees to open the ALCS *unless* they sweep the Indians and the Angels-A's series is NOT a sweep. In that case, they host the Red Sox. Minnesota loses any tie with the AL West champion, who will finish with at least 92 wins. The Twins can finish with no more than 93 wins.
The New York Yankees are the AL East champion and have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. They play the Twins or the AL West winner (see above).
The Boston Red Sox are the AL wild card. They play the Twins or the AL West winner (see above).
