Squating :booty:

I apologize if this has been discussed before. I was wondering if everyone believes that squatting is a must for females.
I used to squat up to 185 doing 10 to 12 reps. I began having some slight back problems (which I had previously as a teen with slight Scolosis).I no longer do squats and now do A LOT of leg sled/leg press/ and curls and les extensions. It was my thought that squats gave me more a a boxy look (wide waist, thicker hips) and now I have more rounded glutes.
Does anyone have any comments on this?

Well, some will tell you that you should and others will tell you that what you are doing is working for you so why change . Maybe every third wo do squats instead and have a happy medium . just my .02

Hey Jeanie!!

I have to say I NEED SQUATS, but that doesn't mean YOU do. In my experience I find squatting has rounded and built up my butt like nothing else. I am also interested in adding size to my legs.

If you have back problems and you prefer your look without them... I wouldn't do them!

185 for a lady
I like ur idea. Big is not always beauty isn't it.

Britchick has Scolosis also. You might want to check her journal out/chat with her about squats and Scolosis.

You obviously don't need squats. You have an excellent physique. If your back feels up to it, then I think you should try them again because I believe squats to be one of the best exercises out there. Try to get the form of a powerlifter down. You will put less strain on your back.

Lunges can be very effective for the glutes.

Personally, I feel squatting is a must. It's not just for the quads but the hamstrings, glutes, adductors, abductors, hip flexors, entire core. I use to squat heavy too and hit over 200lbs when I did have some issues with my hips rolling. I no longer throw that much weight up there but I keep it reasonable at 135lbs. This way I can concentrate much more on form and slower squats. Granted I do approx. 15+ reps but I have noticed an improvement in my lower body overall.

I'd suggest just lowering the weight, go really low (ass to grass) and concentrate on overall lower body improvement. JMHO.

Don't ass to the grass squats place more stress on one's spine than squatting with powerlifting form?

absolutely a must, for any lifter. Why is it different for a female? get your but under that power rack adn start sweating dammit!

squat = full body exercise, and ATG is the only way to squat. make sure you use good form. squats can indeed make some people's butt and waist slightly bigger, but that's not a big deal. squat is possibly THE best exercise, it's that good.

I already have a wide waist for a woman so I don't want to make it bigger. However, I may try some light squats or lunges next time I do legs.

i guess in that case you don't "need" squat then, lunges will do. if you do squats, make sure you don't squat too low so they don't hit your butt as much. light squat is your best option. or you can try some front squats.

squats will not make your waist larger, thats nonsense. botom line, you need to squat, why would you want to avoid it?

Apparently you didn't read my original post . I used to squat and it caused me to be boxy, I see you like to squat and that is great for you, but my glutes are rounded without them.

I did read it and I also read you asking whether you thought it was a must for females to squat, and I do.. btw the thought of becoming too big is silly. hey its all good, do what you will. just answering the question
