how to wait before PWO shake

i've read somewhere that you should wait at least an hour before taking your PWO shake since digestion requires a lot of blood, thus lowering the amount of blood going to the muscles you just trained. can someone clarify please?

EDIT: typo in title

exactly the opposite...you want to consume the PWO shake immediately after training to take full advantage of the anabolic window...the more rapidly you get nutrients in your body the faster it can begin to recover from the training session. the body can not begin to grow until it has recovered...

According to a book i'm reading, your muscles become insulin resistant as little as two hours after your workout.

I've read studies that show increased benefits from taking the shake 15 minutes or sooner after the workout as compared to later.

Yes after your workouts the blood distribution in your body is mainly peripheral (there is more blood flowing to and from your muscles to take oxygen and energy to your muscles and to remove wastes like lactic acid/carbon dioxide).

And yes digestion requires blood flow to your stomach/intestines - both to help in secretion of enzymes and the contraction of your stomach and intestines to move the food through but also this is how the food gets from your intestines to your liver and muscles (the food enters into small veins in your intestine wall and then drains into the portal vein, which goes to your liver).

So you do need to find a balance between these things - you need enough blood to still be flowing to and from your muscles to give maximal delivery of your post-workout shake... but enough blood to be redistributed to your gastro-intestinal tract so you can actually digest the food you have eaten (otherwise it will sit in your stomach like a lead-brick as this also leads some being to feel nauseous and , especially if the workout was particularly intense).

So although in terms of anabolism and nutrient delivery it is best to actually start sipping your drink in the final stages of your workout, most people find that ~with in 15 minutes of finishing is a good compromise.

Also, if you have a good pre-workout meal, you will ensure that you have amino acids and glucose units available during your workout anyway - and these will be enough to hold you until you can manage your PWO shake.
