Loose skin questions

Greetings all,

Here is my situation, I was at 250lbs 5'11" with a 40" pantsize and am 25yrs old at the beginning of my program, and I am about to start dropping weight at a safe pace and in doing it the right way *hard work & diet change*. I have put on 10lbs already in muscle *up to 260 * but my pants are beginning to fit me more loosely. I am hoping to get down to a 32-34waist and 210-220lbs. Based on others experience, will I have a problem with loose skin? I would like to lose 7-9inches off my waist and just as much and more off my stomach area. I have stretch marks from junior high/highschool where I put on alot of weight quickly, and my fear is that this has stretched my skin too much for me to get it back to normal.

Is there anything I could do or be doing to my skin to help its elasticity? Or if I loose weight at a safe pace and drink lots of water, etc.. will I be ok?

Thanks to all for your help. I searched the database and most people who have posted on this issue lost 100lbs or so. So i am looking for someone who could post knowledgeably on my smaller scale questions.

Thanks,

The Ryan

If you lose the weight too quickly and or have poor skin tissue, yes, you'll have problems with tightness. Best bet is to continue putting muscle on while you lose the weight. That will help.

This is just my opinion. I'm not a dr.

Thanks for the info Babsiegirl.

I'm still pretty young and I plan to loose the weight safely and slowly, so I am hoping you are right. My only concern revolves around the stretchmarks I have from when I was younger. i hope that doesn't limit my skin's resilience and elasticity. So we will see!

Genetics plays a big role in skin elasticity. I'm 31 and I lost 170 lbs and have loose skin. I should have a lot more than I do, but I have good genetics I guess. I obviously knew this would be a problem prior to, so it was no shock to me.

Given the modest amount you need to lose and your age I'd say you should be OK.

Agreed - it's mostly a factor of genetics and then age. You are young enough so there is a good chance it will snap back in. The human body replaces every cell in the body periodically and if you are in a fat loss cycle I would think you will tighten up when you start adding in the muscle again. At any rate, even if it's not all perfectly tight you are much better off being fit than not.

You'll be okay. Nothing you can do about the stretchmarks though. it's hard to say what your skin will do around the stretch area. Do you tan? Some times tanning can help tighten the skin (could be temporary.)

Anyway, keep faith

There is an article about this in today's Wall Street Journal (10/19)

I will try to find it online.

EDIT: that would be yesterday's WSJ, not today's.
