Men have a primal relationship with ice cream. When we were young, our moms used it as both bribe and reward. But now that we?re older and have learned how to eat right, that sugar-laden, fat-filled frozen-milk concoction poses a significant threat to our weight-loss and muscle-gain ambitions. And it doesn?t help our powers of resistance any that the 31 flavors of our youth have multiplied into literally hundreds of irresistible varieties.
Fortunately, ice cream manufacturers have figured out how to craft their offerings with less fat and fewer calories while still convincing your taste buds they?re in the forbidden zone. We?ve saved you from steaming up too many freezer doors by uncovering the best low-fat ice creams available. When you consider that a typical serving of H?en-Dazs has almost 300 calories with 17 grams of fat, you?ll thank us for doing the legwork.
1| Healthy Choice Coffee Almond Fudge Low-Fat Ice Cream (No Sugar Added)
1/2 cup: 110 calories, 20g carbs, 4g sugar, 3g protein, 2g fat, 1g sat. fat
If you like coffee and you like ice cream, offer a deep salaam to the good people at Healthy Choice. This low-fat pleaser is bulging with almonds and fudge, but there?s no added sugar, which keeps calories in check (the fudge contains sugar, but adds a negligible amount of calories).
Top it off: Boost protein and healthy fat with a sprinkling of one tablespoon of sliced or slivered almonds.
2| Ben and Jerry?s S?mores Low-Fat Ice Cream
1/2 cup: 190 calories, 35g carbs, 26g sugar, 5g protein, 2g fat, 1g sat. fat
Sugary marshmallows, melted chocolate fudge and graham cracker wedges churned into a decadent swirl. Sounds like a campfire horror story, but with an oh-so-sweet, low-fat ending. Think Friday the 13th meets Willie Wonka.
Top it off: Marshmallow lovers can add mini-mallows with virtual impunity. Two tablespoons of minis pack a mere 25 calories and no fat.
3| H?en-Dazs Low-Fat Strawberry Ice Cream
1/2 cup: 150 calories, 28g carbs, 18g sugar, 5g protein, 2g fat, 1g sat. fat
Low-fat perfection, simplified: skim milk, strawberries, sugar, cream, egg yolks and vitamin A. And you thought H?en-Dazs was Scandinavian for ?Get fat, you lazy Americans, so we can eat you!?
Top it off: Stick with the fruit theme and add sliced strawberries and fresh or frozen blackberries. One-quarter cup of strawberries plus a quarter-cup of blackberries adds 30 calories, one gram of protein and zero fat.
4| Breyers Natural Vanilla Light Ice Cream
1/2 cup: 110 calories, 17g carbs, 14g sugar, 3g protein, 3g fat, 2g sat. fat
Vanilla often carries a pejorative connotation, but not when you?re talking this version of the tried-and-true classic. The kicker? Not one ingredient listed requires a call to the lab.
Top it off: A spoonful of rainbow or chocolate sprinkles adds a fat-free crunch and only 40 more calories.
5| Healthy Choice Cherry-Chocolate Chunk
1/2 cup: 110 calories, 19g carbs, 19g sugar, 3g protein, 2g fat, 1g sat. fat
No lightweight dessert, this. Each scoop of cherry ice cream boasts copious amounts of cherry halves and sturdy, semisweet chocolate chunks. And since the first two ingredients are whole milk and condensed skim milk, the flavor and texture rival the best full-fat temptations.
Top it off: Add more cherry flavor by topping with sliced fresh or frozen cherries. (Six cherries: 29 calories, 1g protein, zero fat.)
6| Dreyer?s/Edy?s Grand Light French Silk Ice Cream
1/2 cup: 120 calories, 19g carbs, 14g sugar, 3g protein, 4g fat, 3g sat. fat
Known as Dreyer?s on the West Coast and Edy?s back east, this mouthwatering dessert melds chocolate-mocha madness with vanilla-mousse light ice cream and
bittersweet chocolate chips. Between mousse and Laetitia Casta, we say, ?Vive la France!?
Top it off: Sprinkle with dry-roasted peanuts to add protein and fiber. One tablespoon has 53 calories, two grams of protein and 41?2 grams of unsaturated fat.
7| Ben and Jerry?s Ooey Gooey Cake Frozen Yogurt
1/2 cup: 190 calories, 35g carbs, 28g sugar, 4g protein, 3.5g fat, 2g sat. fat
If you swirl your food (peas into mashed potatoes, fruit into oatmeal), this frozen confection?s for you: caramel frozen yogurt, hefty chunks of moist cake and a generous caramel swirl. Just try not to say the name out loud.
Top it off: For extra nutrients, top with fresh or frozen raspberries, which have almost no calories but plenty of fiber.
8| Dreyer?s/Edy?s No-Sugar-Added Neapolitan
1/2 cup: 80 calories, 13g carbs, 4g sugar, 3g protein, 3g fat, 1.5g sat. fat
Check out those stats! Even if you wolf down two helpings, you?re still taking in fewer calories than are in one serving of some competing brands. It?s the classic Neapolitan recipe: lush chocolate, smooth vanilla and fresh strawberry. The latter boasts chunks of real berries for added flavor and texture.
Top it off: For more protein, sprinkle with wheat germ.
