This is all very variable and depends on the individual, their diet and their overall calorie deficiency.

I tend to stay away from cashews. They have a much higher carbohydrate count per 100g than other nuts (about 35g, with only 3g fibre), are higher in saturated fats (~10g per 100g) and are lower in polyunsaturated fats (the good fats).

There are also better nuts than peanuts as well - although these are a good source of omega-6 fatty acids... Although they are better than cashews.

For nuts I tend to stick to walnuts and almonds.

Soynuts are not really nuts (neither are peanuts... but anyway). These are legumes that have been dry-baked to crisp them up like nuts, so they are more of a carbohydrate source than a fat source. They are a good source of complete protein as well (although it is a little low in biological value). But, in my opinion, these are fine when dieting.

What are the qualifications for something to be a nuts?
Some of my friends are trying to get certified.
