How much Glutamine do you all take? Right now I'm at about 45g a day including my pills and what's in my shakes; but what's in my protein is the less-desireable L-Glut Acid. Anyways, I'm just wondering if I'm taking enough.

most i've taken in a day is 20g. I take 10g -15g/day now.

i take 5grams post training, 5 grams before bed in my shake.

5 grams when i wake, 5 grams before my work out, 5 grams after, 5 grams before bed (...but most of the time this serving gets replaced with 1/2 cup cottage cheese)

ASIDE from whats naturally occurring in my protein drinks and food, I will take in anywhere between 30-40 extra g of powdered glutamine per day.

"Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid found in the muscles of the body. Because it can readily pass the blood-brain barrier, it is known as brain fuel. Within the brain glutamine is converted into glutamic acid, which is essential for cerebral function and vice versa. Glutamic acid is also a precursor of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric-acid), an important neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Glutamic acid helps transport potassium into the spinal fluid and is itself an excitatory neurotransmitter.

Glutamine is considered by most athletes to be an essential part of their nutritional program. Glutamine improves mental alertness, clarity of thinking and improves mood. Glutamine regulates protein synthesis, along with inhibiting protein degradation and stimulating glycogen synthesis. Due to these effects, glutamine plays an important part in your body by aiding recovery of muscle cells. Intense weight training has been shown to uniformly decrease glutamine levels by 50%, taking several hours to return to normal levels.

In athletes, glutamine has been used as a marker to indicate over training. In this condition research shows glutamine levels are significantly reduced, taking up to one month to return to baseline. These athletes have increased susceptibility to infection, resulting from impaired immune functions. This is the reason that informed athletes are supplementing their diets with additional amounts of glutamine, also believed to trigger growth hormone release."

personally, i use MRM's powder L-Glutamine.

are pills as effective? How many times a day, and how many grams is adviseable?

Posted by: 19-chief

i find those horse pills hard to swallow but if you can hack it, be my guest. stcik with 5g at a time... at least before the work out and after... if you are doing any kind of post w/o insulin spike, take this at that time to force feed those muscles some glutamine!

http://www.ironmagazineforums.com/sh...ad.php?t=21277
do some searching... but it is basically a way of taking advantage of the anabolic affects of consuming high glycemic carbs to better shuttle nutrients needed for recovery from an intense workout... i mostly do this during my phases of training when i'm trying to gain and i'm not too concerned with some fat gain... par example -when i'm "ON" something... ph/ps's.

keep it simple. train smart. train hard. eat smart/clean. eat often. sleep 8 hours every night.
