I have heard in the past many stories of people that only lift upper body. They decide to start lifting legs and after a few months their upper body is making larger gains then before they started lifting legs.... why is this? Does it have somthing to do with more testosterone? I just dont get it....

well for me it was that upper body was horrible looking, it was soo pathetic it wasn't even funny.. but i already had some leg muscle to hold up my upper pathetic looking body

Yes, its true. Lifts like Squats and Deads and alot of other lower body work is so taxing that it causes your body to release more growth hormone which effect your whole body.

That why you always hear people say, SQUATS MAKE YOUR WHOLE BODY GROW!!! its true its true.

Sure, I and anyone that does these compound movements does but you have to remember that it not like doing AS, your not gonna put on a bunch of muscle fast just because you started doing squats but I know that if you took two test people, had one do squats with there weekly routine and the other do nothing but upper body work that the guy doing squats would be the bigger after a year.

I would have to agree with scotty. also when you do compound movements you recruit many other muscles as stabilizers. doing compound movments alone you can work just about every muscle in you body.

I have had several clients come to me at a standstill in terms of putting on size in their chest/back/arms/shoulders. When I question them about their training I very often hear that they are not training legs, or, are doing so like a whimp! I then start putting them through some serious leg training, and BOOM, they're WHOLE body grows. Leg training definitely has a stimulatory effect on upper body hypertrophy.

I've experienced the same phenomenon. I didn't squat heavy until I got a Mantaray. After that, my body weight shot up 13 lbs in 6 months.

My question is, is it better to do legs at the beginning of the split or the end? I just switched to doing legs last (Fridays) so I could have the whole weekend to recover. I was finding that doing legs on Monday would wear me out for the rest of the week.

I do legs in the middle to split up my upper body, giving my arms and shoulders a break in between.

Mon/ chest, tri
wed/ legs abs
fri/ back, bi's shoulders

I try to always work legs the day before a total rest day. No doubt legs day wipes me out more than any other day.

Where to put legs is a matter of preference. I prefer to train them the day AFTER I've had a full day of rest. I need to be fresh to hit em correctly and with intensity!

I'm ashamed to say that I started out like this as well. I lifted for 8 years without ever doing legs consistently. I've been doing legs consistently now for 2 years and I am glad to say that I look forward to leg day every week now.

yyyyyup. One thing I found was that my legs didn't really start to grow until I started working them. I neglected them for a while.

I only wish that I didn't neglect my legs because it will probably take another 2 years to make them look normal.
