I hate running but I need to do it to get into shape (I'm training for the military).
I only did a few minutes today because I'm really not used to it, I think I ran only once before in my life! Any tips that you people can provide for me? What to do/what not to do?
It's cold up here in Montreal right now, well, not that cold actually. The last few days have been a little mild, but there's still some ice/snow on the ground. I can only go running along the streets in my neighborhood, there aren't any indoor tracks around here.
And don't recommend using the treadmill at my gym, I hate the treadmill, it turns my legs into jello!
Thanks.

Just start out slow then, set goals like "running 5 block one day, 7 the next etc etc"
You'll build your stamina up in no time. I like listening to music when I run, if I get a good couple songs I can run all day.

If you're really out of shape I would start out by power walking 3-4 times per week, gradually increasing distance and speed, ultimately working up to a jog.

When I started running, I walked for about 1/4 mile to warn up, then I ran 1/4 mile, then walked, then ran, and so on....eventually it got to where I felt I could skip the first rest and run 1/2 a mile, then a mile.
Another mind trick I use on myself is run, and when I start feeling tired and winded, I look ahead of me and pick a spot, (like a mailbox or driveway) and make myself run at LEAST to that spot.
