Ketoacidosis

This may be the inappropriate thread to place this question is, but I'm curious.

I know that when a diabetic (me) gets high blood sugar because of a lack of insulin, the body can't synthesize energy by using blood glucose. I've read that the energy the body uses comes from fat; i've seen pictures of people who have suffered from this for weeks, and they have serious atrophy of the muscle, so I'm assuming that the body doesn't just oxidize fat for the energy.

Can anyone elaborate to me what exactly happens in the body when it enters ketoacidosis?

there are various causes of ketoacidosis. but for a diabetic when there is a severe lack of insulin the body can not metabolize glucose so the rate of lipolysis is greatly increased. the amounts of ketone in the body are so high they can not be metabolized or eliminated. then I believe this interferes with intracellular homeostasis of sodium and potassium and most likely the internal organs will start to shut down...

Thanks LAM

I know that the kidneys start filtering out the glucose through the urine, so the first thing they tell you is to drink lots and lots of water. Someone once described it to me as pissing away the cookies you would eat earlier...it is, however, a nauseating experience to suffer hyperglycemia.

Does the body prefer to metabolize fat for energy during this state, I wonder, or does it not discriminate and take out muscle too? I'm curious because blood sugar swings in the 200-300 mg/dl at least once a day and I'm wondering if it's harming my conditioning..
