Do ALL birth control pills make you gain weight???

I started one a few months ago and have gained 10 lbs Really pisses me off!!!

If anyone knows of one that helps you get in shape rather than hinder it, please let me know!

I do not know if ALL do, but I did a little research and this seems to be the consensus:

The combination of hormones (estrogens and progestins) found in some birth control pills can lead to weight gain. These hormones can cause fluid retention, increased body fat, and a bigger appetite in some women. Changes in eating habits, lack of exercise, and some medical conditions can also affect body weight whether or not you take birth control pills.

Unfortunately I haven't heard of one that doesn't. Ive tried a few and the one that you gain the least on is Depo. You could always get an non-hormonal IUD which will not cause any weight gain.

Thanks guys!

Maybe I'll just get John fixed

That really is the safest way for both of you. No joke either

There are alot of new studies showing that birth control can cause bone density issues. I vow never to use them again.

yes all birth control pills suck... vasectomies are great sorry guys .

I vote for vasectomy but if you want a pill that in clinical trials showed initial weight loss in the first year and then afterwards, no weight gain, Yasmin.

Birth control pills show positive effect on bone density, ( http://my.webmd.com/content/article/...0Top%20Stories ) It is the depo-provera shot that can causes problems with bone density.

Thanks bandaidwoman!!!

I went to the Yasmin website and read up on it, sounds like a good one to try. Think I'll call my doctor now.

Gotcha - I knew there was some study on one of the birth controls that caused problems with bone density. Thanks, good to know.

There are also studies out now that suggest the low dosage pills may actually decrease the chance of developing breast cancer - my doc told me that - so I have no REAL proof

I can't remember the kind I use to take, they were low estrogen. Wasn't Yasmin but something similar. Didn't gain weight with those. Now with that patch thing...OMG. Royal bitch from hell. Wasn't a good thing.

I'm currently taking Yasmin (tried them all) and so far, no weight gain. On the contrary, I've lost weight. You'd think all the food I ate during the holiday would've packed on about 5+ pounds and I didn't. I honestly feel Yasmin has something to do with it. I've expereinced NO mood swings, etc...Of course this is my first month (3rd week using.)

I've been on every birthcontrol known to man since I was 12 years old (wasn't for being sexual active.) I give yasmin two thumbs up.

Good luck BF

anyone have an iud? i'm thinking about getting 1.

Posted by: bandaidwoman

yes , I do. the greatest. no hormones, no remembering pills, at first my husband felt the string but after a few times he doesn't notice it anymore.

Posted by: rockgazer69

thank you that was exactly what concerned me.

So you haven't had any pain or complications? I'm not married and I don't plan on doing that again anytime soon. I very well can't ask my boyfriend to get a vasectomey, hmmmm or could I? J/K So after my competition I really need to look into doing something and we HATE condoms and want to get rid of them if we can.

Thanks for sharing your experience Babs! I feel encouraged now

I haven't taken the pill in over 7 years. We always figured if I got pregnant then it was ok. But now that we have our little doll we don't want any more babies any time soon so we need protection until John can get snipped.

Doctor approved my request to switch to Yasmin and I start Sunday so I'll let you know if I have any side effects.

my first few periods were heavy but after that it went right back to normal. I just got the IUD without the impregnated progesterone which prevents the heavy periods. The first week after insertion I did not feel like having intercourse since it was sore but after a week it was fine. It's most easily tolerated and inserted in women who have had children already so if you haven't had children it is a little harder to insert (due to changes that occur with the cervix and uterus after carrying a child) but women without kids can still get it. The nice thing is once you decide to have kids the removal of the IUD allows you to get pregnant as early as the next day whereas coming off pills may take months before you start ovulating again.

does the impregnated progesterone have side effects. this is what my doctor is recommending.

I just did some reading on it. They probably won't let me have an IUD because of the increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. I had an ectopic pregnancy when I was 20 and I have the damn scars when I had to go into emergency surgery.

Rockgazer -the progesterone one has similar side effects as the pill

Posted by: bandaidwoman

here is some info. Even though it utilizes a hormone at much lower concentrations than a pill that incorporates progesterone, it is still a hormone and with it some sideeffects. It is supposed to cause less cramping and less heavy periods than plain IUDs, I have a blood clotting problem since i AM A carrier for Factor V Leyden which is why I can't use it. http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/iudinfo.htm

Seriously doubt it... I sprained my ankle right before Thanksgiving and had to get it x-rayed and they wouldn't do that until they confirmed I was not pregnant... and for health reason I think we've only had sex three times since then all with protection.

Is it not allowed to have sex after giving birth? For how long? I never knew that.

It is customary for a woman to wait at least 6 weeks after giving birth vaginally before having sex. But it can take some women 2 yrs to feel completely normal again both physically and emotionally.

Posted by: Vieope

Funny is that sex during pregnancy is allowed. I found that disgusting.

Sorry

Posted by: butterfly

Not disqusting to us, just very uncomfortable... he couldn't go all the way in without it hurting me.

When I was pregnant I watched a lot of the Discovery: Health channel shows of mom's giving birth... one episode said that the trend in Brazil is for women to get cesarian sections rather than vaginal deliveries. Do you find this to be the case?
