Go to the bottom of the page to teh Andy Bolton Deadlift. Is that good form for the Dead? I thought you needed to get lower.

You don't want to get down, you want to get back. If you get lower, then you are increasing the range of motion, and therefore increasing the amount of work you have to do. Stay up as high as possible to move the most weight.

You don't use your back more, you use your legs less.

I think you should bend a bit lower to reduce the risk of injury to your lower vertebrae...secondly when training i would definately start lower to not only avoid injury but also to work your legs into the movement as it is a full body movement persay...also, it could very well be that Andy's technique is derived from the fact that his posterior chain is much stronger than his legs in a low position therefore making it more advantageous for him to start higher. Try his way and the lower way to see what suits you best with the least amount of pain and greatest amount of accomplishment, I still feel you should train lower even if you lift higher in a meet.

A very fair and reasonable assessment of deadlift form. This is why platform deadlifts are commonplace in PL training. If you're strong from a lower position, then you will be even stronger from a higher position.
