Hey, I need to implement some protein into my before and after workouts, and since protein shakes aren't really an option for me I was just curious if these would be an OK substitute. If not could someone suggest what to get, thanks!

Why aren't protein shakes an option?

Cause I lift at school, it would be a hassle carrying it around all day, and the by the time I need it I think it would be rotten.

if you're going to use a bar at least get a decent protein bar, those things are sugar loaded crap.

why can't you put your days supply of whey in a plastic baggy and use a shaker cup when it's time to mix it up ?

Bah haven't gotten any whey yet, waiting for next check.

But that sounds like an excelent idea, just put whey and mix with water?

Posted by: sara

after workout you need more than whey and water
you need to add some complex carbs

I store my Whey in small tuppereware and while at work when I get my juice I just mix it.

Whey + carbs.

How about taking a banana and a carton of skim milk with you? Then fill the shaker with the milk and drink this while you eat your banana.

Alternatively, you could also add some oats to the whey powder as well and drink that when you mix in some water (got to love those lumpy shakes! ).

People always ask me at work: what you drinking? and I have to explain Sometimes I tell them about the flax oil with my shake and they just freak out
I like being the weird one at work

I know what you mean, they love to stick there nose's in my food.

When I used to work away from home, a girl (we were friends)who sat close to my seck was hungry as heck on a day that I was away form the office and she had noticed that I had all sorts of plastic containers in my desk, so she snooped, hoping to find munchies...But stumbled onto dry oats, 2 flavours of protein powder and creatine!! Needless to say, she went to the cantine and bought something else!!

I always have a shaker or two, in my(huge) purse with a measure of pp ready to just be soaked by water!

If I have a banana in the morning w/ my protein shake, and am looking for some complex carbs to eat quickly with my protein shake post workout, do you recommend eating two bananas per day?

Posted by: calalily1972

I wouldn't really consider a banana a complex carb but if you are bulking then it should be fine. I'd try and vary things though and make sure you get plenty of complex carbs in your diet.

Posted by: soxmuscle

what complex carbs do you recommend?

Posted by: calalily1972

I think for PWO the banana will be better used and in the am and throughout the rest of the day go with oats, sweet potatoes, brown rice, and whole grains.

I eat a banana in my shake w/ oats, so I think I have that solved. I also eat only multi grain/wheat breads aswell as alot of brown rice.

How are sweet potatoes so much better for you than a regular baked potato? what do sweet potatoes taste like, i've never had one.

Posted by: calalily1972

Regular potatos are not slow burning like sweet potatoes are. Higher on the gi, especially russett potatoes. If you HAVE to have white potatos stick with red bliss or new potatos.

Sweet potatoes are soo yummy with a little bit of cinnamon and splenda They taste like pie

Posted by: soxmuscle

sweet potatoes it is.

Posted by: Spitfire

I love sweet potatoes, though I use broen sugar I know some of you cant, but they are really good

Posted by: AnabolicFreak04

Yams w/ cinnamon and Splenda.

Posted by: j rizz

try sprinkeling some nutmeg on them too..
another thing i like to do with my otmeal or protien shakes is to add fat free coffee creamer of choice into them.. just a little tho.. it gives it a little kick.

Sweet potatoes are a completely different animal than "regular" potatoes. They are only lumped together because the look alike...sort of...a little.

In every other aspect, you get a much different beast in the orange wrapper.

Don't these bars contain an insane amount of sugar alcohols and just plain sugars?

Yes. If they taste like candy, then by god they are quite similar to candy is the motto I go by.

Posted by: j rizz

it pisses me off when companies try and put out health bars but they offer all their flavors in 'double dipped chocolate fudge brownie topping sprinkles deepfried in chocolate oil' or some stupid outrageous flavors. when i think of a protien bar i think of something solid and healthy, not something covered in chocolate and caramel like you see with alot of new companys putting out protien bars such as Hersheys and Snickers.

Posted by: soxmuscle

if they are advertised as "healthy for you," 90% of America will purchase them.
