The lower abs myth

I'v read somewhere that there is only 1 abs muscle, and therefore all the exercises for the abs(sit-ups, crouches, leg exercises) have the same effect on the abs muscle. Having that in mind, a question arises, what is the necessity to have more than 1 abs exercise?

Posted by: P-funk

Rectus abdominus is one mucsle, not two. It does however contract both ways (top to bottom and bottom to top) so it is important to do things from both sides (ie sit ups and leg raises). The lower portion of the rectus is les superficial where as the upper portion is much closer to the skin allowing it to be more visible. Want to see the lower part?? DIET. Why is it neccessary to have more than one exercise? Like anything, to prevent adaptation also, some exercises will work your obliques more etc.....

Well said funk.

Because the core muscles are used for damn near everything, they are constantly in flux--growing, getting stronger, adapting. That's why training them can be tricky and sometimes seem odd--work them once a week, twice, three, four times? It all depends on structure and your other movements and how they're affected.

Sorry, but still feel that some DIRECT abdominal work should be done year around, although it never needs to be excessive.

The core is responsible for so many things like stabilization, postore, and the transfer of force between upper and lower extremeties. I would do some direct core work year round.
