doing shoulder presses on the smith machine, is that bad for my joints?

i vote neutral. i dont think they hurt anything but i believe free weight presses are a thousand times better.

It's too restrictive, doesn't allow full ROM. I wouldn't use it. Use dumbbells. If you have to use a machine, use the Hammer Strength if your gym has one.

Use em all.

Every machine has value, imo, if incorporated intelligently.

I use the Smith for front presses, as long as you do not experience any pain you're fine, it should not be the only shoulder exercise you do though.

Negatives on the Smith machine are a real treat for your shoulders if you have a trustworthy spotter.

I do front presses using the Smith, but I usually do another front exercise as well not using the smith.

well, i personally have shoulder issues and i know the smith tends to put unnessary stress on them, while other DB movements don't. Whether the smith accelerated my shoulder issues is another debate in itself...

I use the smith for front presses, but I also use a variety of dumbell raises in my shoulder workout.

adding to the above info.......jrizz, my favorite are dumbell presses with the incline bench set at 75-80 degrees incline, this way you're not so upright and can get more stability from the surrounding muscles. Keep your routine built around the basics as usual, d/b laterals, front raises, upright rows, etc also follow gopros routine, keeps things changing, which is very important......number one thing always, keep your form on all exercises.....another important thing I emphasize with my athletes are all scapula stabilizing exercises.....extremely important and help prevent injury.....
peace

A great shoulder exercise is clean and jerk or otherwise known as pushpress. You pick the bar up from the ground and clean it up to shoulder height then bend the knees slightly and explode back up and press the bar overhead. Its a great exercise for building big shoulders and overall power.
