if you want to lose weight, you need to lower your caloric intake. if you manage to lower you intake by 3500 calories/week then you will lose a pound of weight/week. wether it is fat, water, or muscle depends on your diet. among other things.

3500 calories = 1 lb not 7000

this also does not make sense

Easy... eat 500 cals less a day and in a week you will lose 1 pound... if your a bodybuilder you better hope to god its not muscle. You have to keep in mind water retention and weigh yourself at the same time of day and such.

500 x 7 = 3500 = 1lb

2 + 2 = 4

hmm not really
well for a start if your on a bulking bulking you would shoot for over 500 calories over maintenace so reducing that by 500 cals would put you at about maintenace in which case you should not lose any weight.

and because you calorfic intake is only a partial factor in weight loss. it also depends on your training. if you drop your calories by 500 and sit on your arse all day your not going to lose as much weight as someone who does an hour of cardio every day.

AGREES 3500 CALORIES IS 1 LB. EAT 500 LESS A DAY AND IN A WEEK YOULL LOSE A LB. (OF FAT I DONT KNOW)

Yeah but you will lose weight, so long as sitting on your arse is what you've always done.

the point im trying to make is that diet is not the only factor in weight loss

Not quite true, if you are currently eating maintenance and so not losing or gaining weight then yes. If however, like many you are actually slowly gaining weight cause your'e eating too much even without consciously being on a bulk then you may not lose weight, you'll just slow down or stop putting it on.

along with other factors including your skeletal muscle mass and your base metabolic rate

Posted by: Maynard Keenan

But Of Course......and In My Case How Much Herb I Smoke A Week. Lol

Posted by: ST240

?!?! theres a formula between the amount of calories you intake and your weight?? how does this work exactly?

please tell me what this formula is cuz i am having one hell of a time gaining weight that isnt food in my stomach.

Posted by: Mudge

ST240 its called BMR, then you factor in your activity rate. Start Here

3500 calories is about a pound of FAT, 1800 calories for about a pound of MUSCLE. Does that factor in water weight, or pure muscle alone - I dont know.

If I drop 1000 calories from my daily diet, I will lose way more than 1 pound a week, no doubt about it. Water weight shifts quickly, if I miss one meal (~650 calories right now) I will lose .5-1.0 pounds.

Posted by: LW83

Although I understand what Mudge is saying, I must be confused on the phrasing of the first post.

There's no conversion. Energy does not equal mass.

I could show you 1,000 different ways to make up 3,500calories and they would all weigh different amounts.

You are disregarding digestion and the many other processes in your body that will vary in their caloric needs.

We could get into thermogenic foods (foods that when digested raise body temperature), Chris Aceto covers this in his fat loss book. Fat requires virtually no energy to digest and then store, carbs require some depending what they are, then there is protein which is even more thermogenic, and then there are negative calorie foods and things like hot peppers.

But, these are all things that get more complex. I am talking about slicing a pound of fat off your ass, it will give you about 3500 calories. Take off a pound of muscle, it will give you about 1800 calories worth of heat in a lab setting. How we all arrive there wont always be the same, but BMR and factored activity level will help you get there. Tweaking your diet and such, is outside of the scope of the TRAINING FORUM, so why this thread is even here I dont know

Good catch, you should move this thread and ban anyone who posted in it.

Why is a pound of fat not 4082.3 calories, and a pound of muscle 1814

453.5924g/1lb
9calories/g of fat
4calories/g of protein.
Water excluded

No clue, thats just how I've seen it. Maybe there is a damn lot of cell structure in the subject that was used, or who knows I remember 454g per pound though thanks to Mac n Cheese boxes

say you are maintaining your weight eating 3000 calories a day, if you then for 1 week only eat 2500 you will loose a pound

its not as simple as that there are too many other factors

Posted by: JoeR.

I think this is all pointless, but to add to this confusion:

If you could actually just straight burn off fat, it would take 454 grams which is 4086 cals of pure fat. So I guess it would be safe to say in order to burn 1 pound of fat off in a week you must burn more than 4000 calories more than you take in for the week. Problably need some overhead there because the chances of just straight burning off fat and not glycogen aren't good.

Hi all,

It does not surprise me how many people trying to lose fat but are not succeeding or are finding it difficult - especially newbies!!

There are so many misconceptions, but once these are realized it doesn't necessarily get any easier. There is so much advice out there, much of which is conflicting and can send one into confusion and even worse to throw in the towel.

I have a link here that is well worth a look. It is designed for both the novice and the pro. It has put everything into perspective for me and has given me new focus.

One thing to remember - We are all different - What works for one, does not necessarily work for another!

how does that BMR thing work when people have varying metabolisms.

using my weight of 70 kg my bmr was around 1600 cal
me being moderately active (1.55) and adding the max amount 600 for weight gain yielded 3100 cals.

man i need a hellllllllll of a lot more than that. i donno if i even have gained body fat ever. i remember this one time when i pounded 2 mass gainer shakes (1000cal 253carb 53protein) ON TOP of my "diet" per day for a month and a bit. but i got a gut.... didnt really gain quality mass. maybe i just have shitty genetics.... ah well.

can anyone post their stats (weight/height) and what their daily intake needs to be to gain weight?
