...seem unnatural and overkill--for me at least. Whenever I'm not slamming huge amounts of protien I feel better.

Mmmmmmmmmmkay.

I have one shake a day, I get most of my protein from egg whites and chicken.

Well, you don't need huge amounts of protein, so if you do not want to drink copious amounts of protein shakes then don't do it. It is not going to aid in your progress (as long as you are getting sufficient protein from whole-food sources, and as long as your training and diet are both 'non-stupid').

What I meant is the amount of protien that is recommened--1 gram per bodyweight--which is 280 grams a day for me... is just too much too handle.

Well - it may be... You need to base your protein intake on your LEAN mass - so what is your BF%??

Anything between 1.0 and 1.5g x LEAN MASS is fine in terms of being completely adequate (although I like a minimum of 1.2g x lean mass)...

So if your BF% is 25% then your lean mass would be 210 and you would only need around 210g of protein (or, if you did 1.2g you would need 250g) ...

what do you mean by it's too much too handle ? is is hard for you to eat that much, etc. ?

I've honestly never heard of a high-protein diet making a person feel bad..

Protein shakes cause cancer!

I recently re-adjusted my diet to calc the protein(and fats) using LBM instead of total bw and i feel much better. No bloat. Try rework your diet by using LBM as suggested. You should notice a diff.

I am not trying to eat too healthy. I need the unhealthy stuff to give my calorie intake a boost. I am trying to gain weight. I am to lean for my height. My daily goals are 3500 calories, 220 grams protein, 300 carbs. If I am hungry I'll stop at a burger king and eat a burger. I am 5' 11". I was 155 3 weaks ago. I gained 9 pounds in 3 weeks. I am the heaviest I have ever been. So I guess its working so far. My workouts consist of Bench, DL, Squat, Standing shoulder presses, Heavy bar curls, and some other stuff.

It is good that you are trying to gain weight. But you dont have to eat unhealthy all the time to do that. You may end up gaining fat and then having to work towards loosing fat. Also keep in mind you dont have to be obese to have an unhealthy body. A person can look slim and trim and still have clogged arteries and bad health.

I understand that and I am aware. The foods I listed above are just what I ate yesterday. I switch things up a lot. I eat tuna, steak and other high protein foods. Its not like I eat nacho's every night. Maybe 2 times a week. I couldn't imagine being to fat. That would be great. Since I was 18 my weight was stuck at 155. Now I am 164. I am happy. I am strong and my girlfriend loves it. I don't eat that unhealthy. Probably better then most people. I take vitamins and drink lots of water, most people smoke and drink alcohol.

what he said^^^^^

yeah, dude you keep that routine up and your gonna have to pay for it
in the long run maybe with your life. Like I said in my first post if you gonna
eat that crap, cut it down to once a week. Start loading some creatine
and eating 3500 good cals. Lift short and heavy about 3-4 times a week
8-6 reps, no cardio until you've gained the weight you want. There is so
much you should I really don't know where to start man. Also go get your
bloodwork done and see how actually healthy you aren't for yourself and
then maybe you'll start to listen to us

Where do I get the good calories from. I know what good foods are: chicken, fish, some pasta, eggs, red meat has a lot but that can clog arteries. The good food is really filling so its hard to eat a lot of it. I appreciate the input and advice. I have been following the exact routine you just explained.

I think protein shakes are not overkill if they are used as a supplement for those who don't eat a perfect diet every day and need the protien.

In a perfect world though we would all eat a perfectly balanced diet with whole foods only containing all the protein and vitamins that we need - and shakes would not be needed. Short of the perfect world the protein shakes help fill in the gaps.

OK, if you are eating that kinda stuff couple of times a week or so as a cheat meal, thats ok. Cheat meals are recommended to keep your sanity.

I suggest that you study the sticky 'Guide to... ' that contains great info on fixing your diet. It also contains a shopping list of recommended foods from which you can choose from. some pointers here. Then post a thread of your diet meal by meal with total cals and macros for a critique.

Simply eating to put on weight will result in fat weight gain. I assume you have a training routine in place to build some mass, if not then you should sort one out.
