Terrell Owens, who is to be paid $3.25 million this year, is one of the NFL’s three highest-paid receivers, based on average value over the life of his contract.

His new agent wants better deal from Birds

One year after signing a seven-year contract worth just over $46 million, Terrell Owens wants to rework his deal, Owens' new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said yesterday after meeting with Eagles president Joe Banner.

Neither Rosenhaus nor Banner would discuss what Owens wants, but it is unlikely the Eagles will be willing to accommodate him. In Banner's 11 years as team president, he has never renegotiated a player's contract after one season.

That fact does not seem to deter Rosenhaus, a powerful broker in the NFL whose client list exceeds 90 pro football players.

"I think the issue here is I've had a good relationship with the Eagles," Rosenhaus said. "We've negotiated contracts for Hugh Douglas, Jevon Kearse and Jerome McDougle. We recently signed Tra Thomas, as well as Terrell. So I've got some work for the team, and I plan on getting it done."

Rosenhaus did not rule out that Owens could miss some or all of the Eagles' off-season workouts or minicamps, and possibly training camp should a new deal not get done.

"It's not really something I can make any predictions on," Rosenhaus said outside of the NovaCare Complex.

The meeting between agent and team president lasted all of five minutes. Although he represents other Eagles and has dealt with the team in the past, Rosenhaus came to Philadelphia to introduce himself as Owens' agent. He said he intends to make a follow-up, in-person visit, although it is unclear whether Banner would agree to one.

No one would benefit from a nasty contract dispute, and Rosenhaus said he will work to keep that from happening. He said he intends on "keeping everything very positive," and said he plans on meeting with Banner again, possibly this month.

"I'll be back again, and I hope to continue a dialogue with the team at this point," he said.

Banner issued a statement: "I had a brief meeting this afternoon with Drew Rosenhaus, who now represents Terrell Owens. We discussed his new representation of Terrell, as he does often with teams of new clients. We are not prepared, at this time, to discuss any other details of the conversation."

Owens could not be reached for comment.

While the Eagles started their voluntary off-season workout program Monday, Owens is not participating. Players under contract are required to report to the team's first minicamp April 28. The camp is scheduled for April 29-May 1.

After a complicated series of events last March eventually led to the Eagles' acquisition of Owens in a three-way deal with Baltimore and San Francisco, then-agent David Joseph negotiated a seven-year deal with the Eagles, which included an $8.5 million signing and roster bonus.

Owens is scheduled to make $3.25 million this season and then receive a $5 million roster bonus in March 2006. The Eagles could escape paying that roster bonus if they were to release Owens before then.

Rosenhaus would not say whether Owens is unhappy with the Eagles, or whether the roster bonus is a point of contention.

"I'm not really in a position where I can comment about specifics," Rosenhaus said. "This is something we initiated. It's nothing bad. It's only good. We think it's something that is going to resolve itself, and I intend to do my best to get it resolved."

Under his contract, Owens would earn base salaries of $770,000 in 2006, $5.5 million in 2007, $6.5 million in 2008, $7.5 million in 2009, and $8.5 million in 2010.

While his base salary will drop significantly before climbing again in 2007, Owens will average more than $6 million a year over the first three years of his deal.

Owens is either the second- or third-highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, behind Oakland's Randy Moss and possibly Indianapolis' Marvin Harrison, who signed a seven-year extension with the Colts during the 2004 season. Owens' average salary over the life of his contract is just under $6.6 million.

Although Rosenhaus would not say when or under what circumstances he became Owens' agent, it appears Owens fired Joseph last week. Joseph had been Owens' agent since he was drafted by the 49ers in 1996, and the two men had an extremely close relationship.

Owens has said he considered Joseph, who is based in Greensboro, N.C., a member of his family and spoke glowingly about him in his autobiography that was released in September. Joseph handled many facets of Owens' life, including the receiver's Web site.

Owens remained loyal to Joseph when the agent came under fire last year for failing to file paperwork on time so that Owens could become a free agent. That apparent blunder led to the initial trade between the 49ers and Ravens.

Joseph did not return phone calls yesterday.

For Rosenhaus, the acquisition of Owens adds to the list of high-profile players he has signed this off-season. Edgerrin James and Plaxico Burress, among others, also recently switched to Rosenhaus.

Asked whether he feared a contract dispute would soil Owens' relationship with the Eagles, Rosenhaus said: "I came in to talk to the team about something I think is positive for everybody. Terrell's a phenomenal player and an important part of this organization. It's my objective to keep it that way for a long time to come."

While Owens may wish to have his contract renegotiated, it is not unusual for teams to ask players to restructure their contracts for salary-cap reasons.

Owens is coming off a terrific season in which he caught 77 passes for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns before injuring his right ankle and leg against Dallas on Dec. 19. After intensive rehabilitation, Owens returned for the Super Bowl and turned in a stunning performance with nine catches for 122 yards.

That's great!

TO...what a guy.

My roommate is a big TO guy, and he just told me that he is most definitely a cancer and apparently, when being interviewed, said he will be holding out through camp if he doesn't get what he wants.

I do not think the Eagles will negotiate with his agent.

He's a greedy SOB. He probably knew he would do this when he originally signed the contract. "I'll just sign now to get a contract done, then demand a new contract next year." What a cocksmoker.

Posted by: Dale Mabry

Yeah, coming back and being the only shining light in their Super Bowl loss prolly didn't help matters either. I remember when Duce Staley did this, it got him nowhere.

Posted by: ponyboy

How many games did he not play last year? They made it obvious that they can play well without him so I say tell him to F off and release his ass. After all the trouble he'll have to take a pay cut just to sign up with another team unless someone else is really dumb and signs him for more.

Why can't players just play the damn game? As if 6 million a year isn't enough. It's stuff like this that makes me really sick of pro sports.

It only makes me sick when it happens to the Patriots.

6 mil isn't enough, you fuckin greedy bastards? Oh ya, i forgot you had to play sports for a living

(at the same time though, you gotta place SOME of the blame on everyone...the owners, fans, the gov't etc., cuz we allow it to happen )
