questions about prework meals.....

Okay my first question is:

1. I've heard somewhere that for stricly gaining more muscle mass, your preworkout meal is more important than PWO. True or False?

2. Let's say i eat a meal with some slow burning carbs, lots of simple carbs and protein. 1 hour later i do some HIT cardio (short session). Is it possible for the carbs and protein i had (1 hour before HIT cardio) to be used to refill muscle glycogen and repair muscle tissue afterwards without having to eat again?

Or MUST i eat a PW meal to refill muscle glycogen and repair muscle tissue in this case?

Any insight would be appreciated!

both are very important. pre is for giving your body the energy it needs for your workouts and preventing catabolism. post is for recuperation and also to prevent catabolism.

why would you load up on carbs prior to cardio?

Yeah what he said, both are equally important. I don't think your preworkout meal should have any carbs, it should be your postworkout that has them loaded.

I disagree, how are you supposed to power your workout without some complex carbohydrate?

definitely... Even people on extremely low carb/keto diets have carbs pre and postwo.... Gotta have energy, otherwise your not gonna do anything in the gym.

Ok thanks but my question really is: is it possible if you have a big enough pre workout meal and workout only for 20 min or so, for your muscles to be repaired without any post workout meal.

Is this possible???

depends on when you had your meal in relation to your workout, what you ate in that meal, what your total food intake was like (if that pre-workout meal was your only meal for the day), what type of training you did during that 20 minutes and lots of other things.

But yes, it is possible that if you ate a good meal that was still being 'digested' during your workout, then that fuel (assuming it was not utilised during your workout) would be available in the immediate post-workout period to fuel recovery.

I have a question. I am trying to gain mass FYI. I usually have a sandwich and yogurt before my work-out. What would be the best type of meal for my post? Spaghetti or a steak? I usually do chicken breast covered with spaghetti. If I don't have any chicken breast I'll have spaghetti then 2 hours later eat my steak. So basically should your post workout meal be mostly carbs, protein or equal amount of each?

You post wo meal (eaten within 1hr of completing your wo) should contain all 3 macros. Your pwo shake(consumed immedately on completion of your wo) should be carbs and protein (oats+whey) only.

Why oats and not pasta?

Pasta in your pwo shake? pwo shake is a shake that you simply chug down immediately after your wo.

This is what i do. Grind a whole bag of oats and store it in an empty protein powder container. Add the required amount of ground oats+protein powder in a small leakproof container (dry) as per your cals required.

When i get to the gym, i add water. shake for a few seconds and then let it stand in my locker while i go do my wo. When i come back, the oats would have softened and it is not lumpy. shake again and drink. You could also eat a banana with it.

Pasta is ok in your pwo meal if it is whole wheat pasta.
