Are they a useful exercise? I used to do them all the time, but I stopped doing them after I started going to the gym and working out my chest etc. using weights. I know some people who do pushups everyday and they seem pretty cut. What would you recommend?

Pushups, in my opinion, do have a place....like at the end of a chest workout to finish off. They are a good finishing exercise.
I don't think doing pushups every morning, in addition to doing a chest workout once a week, would do anything for you and might even cause you to overtrain.

I heard somewhere that your muscles remember the weight of your last rep. So its better to bench to failure on your normal bench than it is to do push ups or a lighter weight at the end.

What are your thoughts on this?

i wouldnt say the MUSCLE remembers, but its more of a mental thing. your used to doing a certain amount of weight and putting a lot of effort into those muscles, your mind is telling your body to put forth the maximum effort if your going big, and then you switch from that to something light, its going to feel a lot lighter than if you went small first and then to big because in your mind you havent adjusted to recruiting less muscles to do the job. your still recruiting almost the same amount as before but on a lighter weight now. just my thoughts though

I agree with this post. In fact, I can say it is true because when you do pushups to failure which most people do, it overexerts the very muscles used for bench pressing which takes away from your max.

I love doing pushups, when im bored at home and want to exercise because i love it so much i do push ups with arms far apart to close, from legs slanted up and work my way down, it works out your pecs, shoulders, lats, triceps, biceps and many more muscles, even powerlifters do pushups. keep doing them and then you can rip peoples heads off with your bare hands, at least thats what my weight lifting goal is.

This is a myth.

I agree with StevieMac, pushups are great for ending a chest or tricep workout. They are also great for doing lots of if you don't have access to weights.
