Hi all,
I am currently constructing my home "gym", what is best between using a pec deck or doing dumbell flys using a bench? The reason i ask is i can save space by taking the pec deck attachment off......
cheers,
Boomster

My opinion is that for overall size, dumbell flyes are superior.

I agree, dumb flies are king.

Thanks for the replys fellas, the pec deck is gone!!!!

I have just one more question, when doing squats is it best to do the 20 rep squat routine or still stick to around 8 to 12 reps and how many sets would you advise?

Posted by: musclepump

I do three to four sets of 12-15

I wouldnt CUT OUT the pec decks completely.... after a while wouldnt it be good to throw them in there instead of the dumbell fly's to give your body something different, instead of doing the DB fly's every time you workout?

I like the pec dec better as it guides my motion and i can feel it more...probably because im doing my flies incredibly wrong... but all i can do is mimmick what i see and i just dont feel it for sum reason.. and when i pile up the weight i cant do it at all.. lol

For me, flyes has contributed as much to my chest size as presses have. I have my own groove for them that makes me feel like I'm using a machine, and this has allowed me to go as heavy as 110 lb dumbells for these on a flat bench.

Wow,.. id have to get someone to monitor and correct my form before i traded flies for pec dec

Damn Gopro, I knew you were big, but 110lbs dumbells for flyes !!! That's some crazy weight

To be perfectly honest, I do not go that heavy anymore...in fact, I don't go as heavy in anything as I used to. In my late 20s I went on about a 2-year binge of pure power training and got up to lifting some pretty hefty poundages, but not just in the classic lifts like benches, squats, deads, etc, but in movements like flyes, laterals, upright rows, dumbell curls, etc.

But yes, at one point I WAS hitting 110 lb dumbell flyes in good form.

Why dont' you go heavy anymore? Bad on joints? I am 23, bulking and I go as heavy as I can. I hope my joints will all work when I'm 35.

I still go heavy, but just not quite as heavy. I lift much slower and more strictly than before. I will still do flyes with 90s for example, but I don't feel the need to "test my strength" anymore. This is because I have found other ways to grow, and because I want to save my joints, which have taken an awful beating over the years.

At my best I was pulling 255 lbs for 8-10 reps, with just a small jerk to get it going and bringing the bar to chin height.

I do pec deck. Sometimes with plenty of burns. I can NEVER get the same from DB flies. BTW, my chest responds just fine with them.
