Length of cut

What's the longest you've been on a cut and how do you gage your results?

For example: Do you set a goal and if you haven't reached it in a month do you go back to maintenance and try again in another month?

I'm sure this depends on the person but there has to be some sort of average out there limiting the psychological and physical criteria for this type of physical change?

What have you guys personally experienced?

I usually set a realistic goal bf% that I should hit in about 2-3 months. aiming for fat loss around 1+ lbs a week.

For my competitions I did 17 total weeks and dropped from 202 to 158 (after drying out)

Wow. Is that a normal cut? How much actual fat did you lose? How many pounds of water did you cut? Do you lose muscle when you cut? Obviously you don't want to but does that occur?

at roughly what BF% do you need to get down to see your ripped muscles (specifically abs)

I've read that it's based upon the individual but below 8% is around avg. Anyone else?

It was a normal cut for me, though it was my first for competition. Lost damn near all my fat. I was 164 before dropping water, so that made six pounds of water. I'm sure I did lose some muscle--and it generally does happen at least a tiny bit for most people. You'll see pro's doing very slow cardio for long periods of time to minimize this, whereas I did HIIT for most of my sessions.

When I was competing I never let myself get more than 15lbs of fat over contest weight. So I only would diet 6weeks; if you need to diet 3 or 4 months to get in shape for a show then you need to rethink you're off season diet ( i.e. Lee Priest ).

As it was said - it depends on the individual (genetics, body shape etc). It also depends on an individual muscles development. You can have really low BF%, but if your abs are not developed you will not get those ridges and you will not have a 6-pack.

However, usually males start to get good abs in the 10% range.
